The United States acquired this land both by settling (taking/war) and by buying (yes, a good amount was actually purchased - contrary to what some people who don't know history have said). Those are the only two ways any group of people have claimed their land.
Simply because the United States did so more recently than some others doesn't automatically mean the Americans don't "own" the land. Age of possession isn't the determinant for national ownership - possession in and of itself is.
Simple. They take it over. It might sound bad, but if anything, they're doing that land a favor by bringing their lifestyle from third world to first class all the way. Everyone wants to be an American, but some people aren't willing to take the steps to get there.
