With the enormous numbers of immigrants coming to Britain should anything be done to protect what we have?

i do feel that some of our traditions (ok so we haven't got many as brits, but different areas have!) are being sacrificed not spefically because of immigrants but because of all this "don't wanna offend anyone" attitude that is being forced upon us. I work in the public domain and have frequent "comments" about my cross that i wear. I don't ask anyone with head scarfs to take them off when i serve them so why should i be subject to such insults? I believe everyone has their own right to believe in certain things but if they choose to live here our right to carry on our traditions and beliefs should be accepted aswell. Why should we change them just for the sake of others who don't agree with them? Again, i'm not poining the finger just at immigrants. Some of us brits are just as bad at ignoring each others traditions!!!
You wont get opinions but lots of 'verdicts' from people who are spoilt for choice as at least half a dozen questions like this are asked every day and the questioner gets many stars for his observations. Good luck

i tink courses ought to be introduced in the school system to bestow a sense of pride and culture in England.speaking of which they were not the original settlers.they were migrants themselves rmbr vikings,angles,saxons,romans,e... always been a contested land which draws people to itself despite the fact it has not natural resource to recommend it.i tink the interest and the pride should be in the land.it was b4 us and will be after we ave gone so stop pollution
They get protection because they are constantly under attack. Yes they're different, but we all live on the same ball of mud.

I am an Indian. What we have been given to understand through the media is that the British government is unreasonably thwarting all the efforts of the Indian communities especially the doctors from pursuing their careers in Britain, where they have been living and working for years together. Yours is an opportunity to know about the other side of the picture. I am able to appreciate your concern, as a native British citizen . At some point, you need to draw the line. The solution lies in all immigrants getting integrated with the local culture and the people. Only time can offer the right solution.
Good question!. But, what if you asked the same question on the immigrants country's Yahoo, what answers will you expect.
Migration is not a new thing. If it were not for that, who would have built the great "New World" (USA) etc. who would take a low income job of cleaning your street? would you do that, and the next street just to stop a poor immigrant allowed in to do just that?. Read Sociology at it's best. Think of your well being and let others do the same. Wish you a good day.

Immigrants do play an important role in our society provided they are the right sort of immigrants. This implies that the immigrants should be skilled, should not be a drain on our benefit system, should speak English, should accept the way of our country. If any potential immigrant fails on any of these counts, he/she should not be admitted. Because we are a tolerant (over-tolerant?) society we tend to offer a helping hand to others less fortunate. Regrettably, many of those helped in this way bite the hand that feeds them. Belatedly, I think the government is just beginning to wake up to the fact that there is a limit!
This country was built off the backs of immigrants. And, Everything this country has was stolen in the first place from a lot of the so called Immigrant's countries.

I agree things have to change .My dad served in army for 25 yrs an last year found himself unemployed for first time since he was 15 yet, when he tried to sign on he was giving the run around for weeks telling him he wasnt entitled for money and rent help etc. Yet someone can come over from a different country an they are given housing ,money etc without it seems any difficulty at all!!
The Polish immigrants were critised for taking jobs, usually jobs that other people didn't want to do, then they were accused of being scroungers. They can't win, can they. I bet they're not on the same wage structure as you, and also would you do a job cleaning toilets, didn't think so!
It's finally dawning that multiculturalism does not work, for Christ sake you don't have to be Einstein to have worked that out. Any ordinary sensible man in the street could have told the government that. We have to protect Britain,but how? We must start by pulling up the bridge. Filling in that bloody channel tunnel Then start finding all the failed asylum seekers, overstayers and every other ponce that just doesn't feel like going back their own country.
There was a interesting survey where they showed something like 40% of Britons who wanted tighter immigration controls would them selves like to live at least part of the year in Spain, or some other nice place.

You are correct. In most of the local shops, the shopkeepers have taken to posting signs in Polish. A few weeks ago while I was queing in one of said shops a pole tried pushing in when I remonstrated with him the shopkeeperstarted serving him and said 'Oh ill just serve him to get him out of the way' I (and the 8 people behind me) then dumped our shopping on the floor and walked out. I havent been back since. Then look at Natwest bank with their special bank accounts for Polish people etc etc everyone is falling over themselves for these people and the British are being pushed to the back of the queue and the government doesnt care.
Note to Afrowoman. Why should it be payback time? I suppose this is another 'Oh you had an empire in Africa and Black slaves' cry is it? That was a long time ago and I had no part in it. If I have to suffer for what other white people did. If thats the case then I am going to go and get an unregistered uninsured untaxed car and drive it into a black person then fail to stop and report (happened to me December 2006) and im going to assault and rob a black person while stamping on his head and making racist remarks (happened to me November 2005) if youre volunteering to be the black person for either of these, drop me a line

Look, we need people from other places. For one thing, countries need diversity in order to stop them from becoming, basically, distinct from reality and ending up with those funny little ceremonies where people frogmarch up and down the street before throwing stones at the moon.
For another thing, there's no point spending decade after decade beating back racism and then qualifying it with 'oh, they don't have to live with us surely?' Yes. Everyone has as much right to be here as you. Deal with it or go back to the forties. And finally, we need the expertise. We need doctors, engineers, farmers - the whole gamut of professions - by the handful because our education system isn't producing enough for our needs.
Of course, this has the converse effect of ruining the economies of their home countries, who are now suffering skills shortages across all high-end skills.
The idealist answer is that the entire planet should be universally pleasant to live on - but that's a long project, and people want to go to the places that will be the best for their families. Wouldn't you want the same?
why if we go to there country we have to abide by there laws and dress codes but here they dont have to Im sorry im not racist but i see so much changing we are losing our freedom of speech we cannot say black without being offensive black is a colour we are now told not to wear a crucifix because it offends them SORRY but they offend me in ways also but Iv never voiced it before if i want to wear a cross i will they seem to have more rights than us and i know of one where the system payed for a full blown wedding think they,d do it for my kids i think not
