Do most Americans hate Indians or people of any other nationality working there?

You see...i am from India .One of my brothers work in US in a well known IT company(don't want to name it). He told us that he often faces racist slurs from his American colleagues(not all of them...some are quite good). Why does this happen?oh,by the way he works in a high post...so, i am quite serious about this.don't think i'm asking this for fun especially after the recent immigration-guest workers debate in the US.

Answer:
No matter where you go in the world, there are people who hate other people. And for many different reasons including culture, religion,... and yes even jealousy.
Many Americans feel disenfranchised in their own country. Especially older people who have worked hard and feel others coming here legal or illegal are getting better or more benefits without having to work for them. Many cultural differences account for these feelings. one example might be: many immigrants live in extended family situations where there are many workers who combine their income to pay for the car, house and other needs. As a result, they are often able to purchase a home in a shorter period of time & often a business to create cash flow, where several family members work to the betterment of the entire family.
Americans have become islands unto themselves. Each living in their own house, having several cars and not combining income in a way that promotes wealth. Parents age and are left to fend for themselves making decisions on whether to buy medicine or food this week. While their children drive 40K+ cars and live in 5000 sq ft houses and visit once or twice a year out of guilt.
There are so many issues regarding immigration that it is hard to come up with ONE true reason for what happened to your brother.
Often people come here and don't learn correct English conversation to be Understood in the workplace, thereby creating confusion among co workers. While proficient in their work, they lack the conversation skills to interact in a positive way with co workers. On the other hand the coworkers feel they were passed over for promotion in favor of someone they see as an outsider. thus causing friction.
It is way more complicated than one can sort out in a timely manner here.
These are just a few thoughts of mine.
Good luck on your quest. ma
I can only speak for myself...

I have no problem with people legally immigrating.

Illegals need to go back where they came from and apply for legal entry.

Most of the legal immigrants work harder than the average person who was born in the US.

Most of the illegals that I have run into are lazy and useless.
No, of course we don't hate people of other nationalities working here. We just can't stand it when ILLEGAL immigrants come here, take jobs, social services, commit crimes, and help raise housing prices, without paying taxes.
I'm all for LEGAL immigration, I think its one of the things that make this country great.
I am real sorry to hear about what your brother goes through. My guess is that it stems from jealousy from your brother's co-workers.
They probably feel threatened by your brother's intelligence and success.

Don't worry though, not all of us think that way. I am glad that we have a lot of talent in IT, and that the professionals come from all over the world.

A citizen who lives among a large IT area.
we don't like illegals coming here and making demands they have no rights to. welcome if your legal. it's bad for what your brother is going threw
dont listen to machoman he is a racist person. hating on himself.
Because the immigrants are willing to work for much less than the going rate, dragging salaries down.

This is because many immigrants go to the US on a temporary basis, living sparsely and sending money back to their families in their home countries where the cost of living is much cheaper.

In the process, the now-deflated salaries are no longer sufficient to support the families of the Americans who have to compete with the immigrants.

For Instance, at the Los Angeles stock yards, the average salary is currently $9.00. Back in 1987, the average salary was $18.00. This drop in salary was due to the flood of immigrant labor from Mexico.

Now many of the people in IT/tech see a very real threat from India and China, who together produce 2 million new engineers a year compared to 50,000 in the US.
Your brother must work with some jerks or something and legally he could make some problems for those people. We have TONS of different minorities working all over the US. Big companies, especially in large "well-known" companies, have so many minorities that if people were going to be racist, they'd have to spend all day doing it.

I don't know what's going with your brother and I am sorry for him, but we have many races all over our country.
It's total BS. I've worked for a lot of IT companies, most of whom are well-stocked with Indian immigrants, and the Indians are treated very well. Some of these companies even celebrate Indian holidays, just to make the immigrants feel welcome.

On the other hand, I have also dealt with a lot of Indian recruiters working over here, and every single one of them has lied to me and tried to rip me off. The latest attempt was just yesterday. I've worked for Indian "managers" whose only management skill is blaming others for their own failures. I've had Indian immigrants tell me how *I* should conduct myself to satisfy *their* cultural expectations.

So I doubt that your brother faced any racial slurs at all, and if he did, he probably earned them by his own behavior.

btw, if your brother doesn't like it here, he can always go home and get a job sprinkling cow piss on schoolchildren to "purify" them: http://in.news.yahoo.com/070426/211/6f19...

In spite of the heated debates in the political section, very few Americans that I have met hate other peoples. They throw the word around a lot around here because people get overly passionate about political ideas.

Some people do resent immigrants and believe they are taking away jobs. That could be especially true in the IT field. They may have resented all the IT jobs taken over by Indians. As a former IT person, I could understand that. Many Americans often result to vulgar and potentially hurtful words because many are never really required to grow up. Maybe you can blame our incredibly prosperous nation or something else. I imagine there are A-holes in every society but in America, people can often say whatever they want.

I have heard people making racist slurs and they mean it but it is fairly rare. Perhaps the people saying it didn't realize how it was taken. They may have been angry of perceived loss of pay or just been A-holes. It is embarrassing to hear that as an American. I seriously doubt that it has anything to do with race. It is much more likely a perceived loss of income that might cause some to express anger in a childish way. I am not excusing it, but just giving my opinion as to why it probably happened.
There could be a few different arguments for this... of course not all Americans hate some one of a different nationality. However, many times Indians come to USA and stick mainly with Indians only working to send money to India. they give nothing back to the united states but loss of American jobs. Does it matter if he works in a high post.. Indians always have to feel they are better then others. I knew this Indian woman from Lucknow she was in Columbus, all she would say is how great India is, how stupid Americans are, how the food in India is better etc well if you only like America for the money I think it would be better to stay in your own country rather then come and over crowd ours...and we don't have cows or sheep walking in the streets of our major cities...
It depends on what city he works in. Racial tolerance differ city to city. Racism differ between race as well. Indians are sometime seen as stealing high paying jobs, and thats probably where your brother see the racism coming from.

My question for you is why are you so suprised. Isn't there a racism problem in India as well. I heard stories that there is continued belief in the caste system and a mosque was bombed recently. Racism is in every country in the world.
no,
Unlawful Entry is a CRIME. Zero tolerance for immigration-law violators! No amnesty, no "stealth-amnesty." No "change of status," marriage fraud, "exceptional leave to remain," no "Temporary Protected Status." If you break the law, depart or be deported. Illegal aliens kill more US citizens each year than the war in Iraq has killed in four years. Apologists for illegal immigration like to paint it as a victimless crime. But in fact, illegal immigration causes substantial harm to American citizens and legal immigrants, particularly those in the most vulnerable sectors of our population--the poor, minorities, and children. Additionally, job competition by waves of illegal immigrants willing to work at substandard wages and working conditions depresses the wages of American workers, hitting hardest at minority workers and those without high school degrees. Illegal immigration also contributes to the dramatic population growth overwhelming communities across America--crowding school classrooms, consuming already limited affordable housing, and straining precious natural resources like water, energy, and forestland. Taxpayers are being forced to pay for the free health care, education, and other welfare programs being given to illegal aliens; Those tax dollars could be given back to U.S. taxpayers or used to keep our borders secure; They may be here illegally, but they sure know how to "work the system" to collect "free" medical care, "free" education, "free" food, Section 8 housing vouchers and other housing assistance, and hundreds of other social services. It costs citizens additional hundreds of billions of tax dollars at every level: local, state, and federal. It gobbles up billions of our charitable contributions. And much of that money ends up siphoned out of our economy and into offshore accounts. Illegal aliens, over half of whom work "under the table" with neither job nor income reported (nor taxed), are not counted as employed or unemployed. But some of those day-labor and off-the-books "job-lets" would be "real" jobs - available to American citizen job-seekers - if employment regulations were enforced. Illegal aliens can get away with tax evasion, et al., which citizens cannot. In short, we have too many workforce entrants and too few jobs created. The ratio works out to roughly 7-10 workforce entrants per job created. If all illegal aliens depart or are deported, all legal immigration halted, and all temporary employment visas abolished, we still have a problem with more US-born workforce entrants than new jobs created. Illegal immigration damages our country and our citizens every day at every level. And not even the attacks of 2/26 and 9/11 have awakened many Americans to the vast dangers illegal immigration poses to our selves, our families, our communities, our society, our values, our principles, our civilization. Zero Tolerance for Immigration-Law Violators! We must remember the lessons of 2/26, 9/11, and the costs we bear every single day. God Bless the U S A !
