My J1 visa has not expired yet but my work permit has. What'a my legal status?
Answer:
You are only permitted to engage in such activity as is annotated on your DS-2019 so I am assuming that is what you are referring to. If the DS-2019 is expired, expiring then contact the university office for exchange affairs and obtain their assistance in obtaining a new form DS-2019.
Your status is that you need to contact the department of immigration and fix the problem to work within the United States legally.
Are you talking about your DS-2019 not being expired or your visa stamp in your passport? As long as your DS-2019 is valid, you're okay (assuming you're following all the requirements for your J-1 visa). Your visa stamp (in your passport) can expire, as long as your DS-2019 is valid. You'll just need to go to an Embassy next time you leave the country to get another stamp.
Your work permit should have nothing to do with your visa, unless all you're doing for your visa is working. Your J-1 sponsor should have an immigration team and/or lawyers that you can talk with.
