as long as they can get away with it.
They can stay as long as they want to. We have laws but the police and law makers don't care about enforcing them.
i have same problem, my friend is in the uk, i am usa/
can stay for period of 6 months at time, but at 3 months interval. would have to leave for 1 day then could come back. go down to mexico or cross over to canada for one day. that is just on a non visa holiday. sign papers on plane. that could not be changed. or could apply for visa before coming and then visa could be changed to stay and live or get married,
3 months, but who in there right minds would want too. Richest country yet it must also claim the fact by its owm standareds it is on the poorest.
Ask anyone without health insurance, job or home.
Ask the elderly, they are even worse of than our pensioners (unless they are the lucky few).
