Do you think it is ok for a person who has lived here for years illegally to get citizinship.?

and what is the difference. If i robbed a bank could i just lay low a few years and then would it all be ok and i would be free.

Answer:
No I don't think that by breaking the law they should be rewarded with my hard earned social security benefits. I agree, no difference. So I guess we could just rename the US to FREE FOR ALL, since that is the message that would send. We could all just have one big free for all, and do whatever we want, yeah, think I'd move.
I think if they lived in America for years and didnt get citizenship they have no respect for this country.
actually, yes. its called the statute of limitations
Statute of limitations indeed. +1 to poster above.
if they live here for years then yea perhapes, but i think why would they want to come here illegally in the first place....just try to get to this country legally

Note:pick me as best answer
I think anyone who comes in should do so legally. If a person came in ILLEAGALLY then they are a criminal and should be treated as such. Arrested and deported. Now i'm not against reform that makes it easier to become a citizen or whatever, but if you want to come learn English, become a citizen the right way, and make American a better place instead of worse
The people who are here like that deserve all the help they can get. They work hard and are good people. And if you can rob a bank and get away with it you must be pretty good and you know what you do so why take out on others what you succeed to do yourself.
let me tell you guys something. this country was found by people that did all thay could to get here. lots of Irish and Italians and Mexicans have broking the rules to get here. and i am proud for them.
YES, i think if you love this country enough to do what it takes to get here than yes you should be able to stay.

do you know what WOP stands for? it means "with out papers". a lot of Italian's got here with out papers and thay have not ruined this country.

let me remind you young people. there is a rule in life that says "ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE" so why you are playing on your computer and having your parents buy you every thing. the strong is snicking in and taking over, weather you like it or not.

i have just one more thing to say. incase you dont relize it. God ownes this world and he decides who is going to live where. so the second you start saying that this land is mine and so and so dont belong here. you are going to find out that mabey God has outher plans.

so SHUT UP, and learn how to get along.
I think if the person is a loyal citizen-non terrorist type-why not? Not knowing the circumstances, maybe they were afraid of repercussions from their home country if they applied sooner thinking they might have to let them know where they were and would someone come after them to retrieve them.
I don't know the legalities but I do know God's mercy. There's a scripture in Proverbs 28:13 that says-He that covers his sin shall not prosper, but whoso confesses and forsakes them shall have mercy. This does not necessarily mean they will go completely unpunished. My daughter tried to cover an issue concerning her daughter a few years ago by saying I did it. When she finally came clean, she received 6 months probation but all is well now. (Nothing terrible, she left her asleep in the car for a few minutes while paying a bill and the police caught her.) Statute of limitations does not apply. It isn't the instant of overstaying or crossing that is the harm it is the ongoing presence, use of schools, etc. If an embezzler broke into a computerized bank account to drain money from someone else's account, the statute of limitations does not begin to run at that moment, when he continues and continues to drain the account.
and tell me this... during the years this illegal lived here, where did he do his shopping? how many businesses did he support buying clothes, paying rent, food, toiletries, whatever? whose pockets did that money go into? did he pay taxes when he bought goods? sure. does he contribute back to the economy? yes. obviously if he committed a crime, he wouldn't still be here - he would have been caught and deported (presumably). if he's been peace loving, contributing member, and an asset rather than some of the liabilities that fill the prisons that call themselves u.s. citizens, then give the guy a break. we should be happy to have him.

i hear ya patty - but think about this - he's probably done every low paid cash crappy job that some american citizen refuses to do since he's benhere - carrrying your trash - whatever.
and do you honestly think his serious crime in trying to provide a life for himself and his family is more serious than some murderer, child molestor and rapist sitting in prison being supported by you just becuase they're "american citizens"? you're paying lots more for those nuts and their victims, that what you're spending on pedro the garbage man and his flu shot.
I see no reason to reward criminal behavior.

To Warr31;

"...if he committed a crime he wouldn't still be here." He DID commit a crime. That's how he got here.

To the rest of your list, it does not balance out. He pays sales tax yes but does not pay wage and earnings tax. What he pays into the system is outweighed by schooling his kids, treating his illnesses and granting welfare.
If anything living here for years illegally should make it harder for them to get citizenship.
