Unlike Europe, Britain is an island, how many more people can we fit in before it becomes intolerable?
Answer:
In fact, we do still have room but trouble is everyone crowds into the south east so eventually bloomin' country will tip up and spill everyone into the Channel. There are vast tracts of northern England and Scotland which are uninhabited which is why Govmts have sometimes tried to pay companies to set up in remote parts. My worry is over the water situation in south east, there isn't enough for those who are there now never mind even more immigrants. My brother travels in via Chunnel every week and he says he's seen carloads and carloads of Bulgarians and Romanians steaming over here.
It depends on the people.
As many as you want !!!
1 more moslem or 50000000 christians
Be thankful you are not the US our bleeding hearts want ALL of them
You can take a few millions more.
Yep..
Britain should have cut off immigration years ago...
Not while fuckin Blair's in charge.
Don't forget bird flu. After the flu there will be more room then people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But there's lots of Brits moving abroad to make room - just ask Spain and Portugal.
There's still plenty of space, lots of empty fields
It is already too late, there are as many as in France already and take a look at the size of France, it is time to start looking after those who are here already and not keep taking on the troubles of the world. In 20 years it will be intolerable we are pretty close now.
Plenty of room yet pal.
Great Britain is a Democracy. It is what every human being needs to be a human. Do not question the needs of other human beings, question the amount of Socialism you and other Great Britons are willing to take before your country collapses.
The world is an island in space.
Yes, there is a limit beyond which mankind will become extinct.
This extinction will be hastened by war as all borders pushed.
If you try to create a bubble with a lower population pressure inside, once the pressure outside exceeds the strength of the border, the resulting inrush of population will be more sudden and violent than if there were free travel.
Think of it in terms of a permiable membrane v.s. an impermiable membrane.
The answer to overpopulation is education. We can either help other countries become affluent and educated, or we can remain isolationist and warlike and eventually be over run.
I would direct that question to the the Chinese.
What does being an island have to do with anything? Britain is a peice of land like any other country. It is bigger than some, like Holland or Belgium, smaller than France or Germany, similar size to Italy. UK is not very much more crowded than other countries like Italy or Germany, less crowded than Holland or Belgium, but France is less crowded still.
Within the UK, population is very much concentrated in the South-East, for which you can blame successive governments, especially Margaret Thatcher's for destroying Northern industries; on the other hand, France and Germany both have areas of concentrated population, around Paris and the Ruhr respectively.
The problem is not too many people, but a lack of proper planning and good public services. It is to do with long-term public policies, and not the fault of immigrants.
Maybe someone should think about positive uses of landfill to create more of Britain....?!
You can fit in, as many as you can fit into a boat before it sinks.
Enjoy Tony Blairbitch's plan to destroy the UK. He's bailing out now and will probably live abroad.
He's got his millions of dirty money to live off of!
Britain is one of the most populated areas in the world. England being far more populated than Scotland or Wales.
At the end of the day uncontrolled immigration does place severe pressure on housing, social services, hospitals, policing and can also cause friction between different communties. Also the present immigration has effected the wages for people at the bottom end of labour market, because thats where most of the competition is for jobs. Not so good when your on the minimum wage. We also already have an employment rate of well over a million which is rising.
Lets not also forget transport, the roads are chocka block with no more major roads planned for construction. If you travel about on the motorways much, more often than not your stuck in traffic somewhere. To give you an example 500,000 -600,000 people have arrived in the UK in the last 2 years quite a few will only be temporary stayers, but out of these people, how many will want to own and drive a car which means more pressure on the road system.
The trains are pretty full with plenty of passengers standing on many services. There is little extra capacity for more trains.
I accept that quite a few are also leaving the country as well (quite frankly I don't blame them) but most of these will be fully qualified tradesman or retired people who can pay their own way.
Yes, I realise we have also benefited from a lot of skilled people as well.
The trouble is Immigration is a balancing act which requires careful planning something which this government is incapable of.
So to some of the comments I've seen such as 'there are plenty of green fields'. All I can say is what a stupid comment and shows how naive you are. There's alot more to immigration than 'there are plenty of green fields' or 'there's alot more room yet'. It needs careful planning and that just isn't happening at the moment!!!!
Not only do we have record immigration, we also have record emigration. That means the total number of people on the island is rising at approximately the same rate as the rest of the world, apart from Africa, where they are decimated by AIDS, famine and war.
Families are smaller and we all want more living space now, and we love to keep building motorways, too. All this is heavy on land use, and can give the illusion that the population is rising.
But this is not what you mean, is it ? You mean there are too many people who do not look or talk like you. You use the bogus "overcrowding" argument to mask your racism. As a white pensioner, I am fed up with people like you giving our generation such a bad name.
Not England, I read the back of an atlas once and it said how many square kilometres each person has in each country and I think England was the worst, and even that was about five years ago. They will never say no more room, just tax us more until we all emigrate. In fact... hmm, everyone I know wants to emigrate but can't afford to... isn't that wierd?
I don't understand your logic - you think continental Europe is an expandable area? It has also its limits. Check the atlas and the countries areas - some are much smaller than Britain and yet have much bigger denstities of people per square kilometer.
It's not an island. Ever heard of the Channel Tunnel?
I'd like to see British people encouraged and paid to have more British children so that we don't need to encourage immigrants.
along the same line as the Russians are planning to do.
I THINK WE SHOULD BE EDUCATING 'THIRD WORLD'COUNTRIES LIKE AFRICA,how long have we been watching them on our screens(usually at mealtimes)-dying of starvation, but with babies and children everywhere!!they can't go on breeding when there isnt enough food to go around.but they do!
Yep , that point will come................ OH!.........
It was on 23rd April 1972. The question is 35 years too late !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...
I think, without being cynical, that we are determined to try and find out.
Many respondents have focused too much on whether we can physically cope with more immigration. That isn't the main point, because, what matters more, is whether the economy, and in particular, the public services, can cope with more immigration. It patently can't.
I don't think there's such a thing as Global warming, it's just Britain is sinking with excess weight of immigrants
You need to check the facts. 92% of Britain is rural land. The people are crowded in to just 8%. This is due to the history of the UK and the richer upper classes owning all of the land via feudal landowning. The (poor) people are concentrated in to the remaining 8%). You can change this by expanding land availability through various mechanisms. Britain isn't crowded, it’s only the cities that are crowded. Don't believe me?
Take a drive around the UK through the rural areas and see how sparsely populated these are compared to the suburban areas of London, Birmingham, Liverpool Glasgow etc. Go to Kent, Devon, Cornwall, Lancashire and so on.
Many, many more millions can (and will) live here. Immigration has been unstoppable throughout history. So what makes you think you can stop what couldn’t be stopped in most parts of the world throughout history?
Britain is an island with a narrow moat separating in from the European mainland. Britain is part of the wider world and thinking we can stop immigration is emulating the ostrich and burying our head in sand when we get frightened.
However, I agree that we do need to do more and better planning but that’s not ever been a British trait. I think we will just keep muddling along – and complaining! (and queuing, endlessly, queuing!)
If many more come they will need wellies on their feet, as they will be standing on the beaches and will get wet when the tide comes in.
