Why is it so wrong to be proud of where you come from?
Answer:
Hi there. Unfortunately, every group of recent immigrants to this country has to go through the exact same thing that Mexicans are going through right now. Which I always find a little sad, considering that aside from Blacks and Native Americans, every single person in the country is either an immigrant or the descendant of an immigrant that made the choice to come here for a better life, just like your family did. Many of them, illegally. And when they got here, there was someone else already here who told them they weren't wanted. The Chinese, the Italians and the Irish are prime examples of that, all having been subjected to ridiculous amounts of racism and exclusion from the job markets when they first arrived (and by that, I mean their first 30-50 years or so). It used to be normal to see signs saying "Help wanted. Irish need not apply." in some places in this country. Now, every bar in the country puts on a huge St. Patrick's Day party and we all wear green and act like idiots, right along with the Irish that so recently, we did not want here. The same thing will happen for your people, over time.
The targets change, but our behavior as a nation rarely does. Mexicans will go through their period of being feared (the main fear seems to always be that there isn't enough to go around and these latest immigrants will be the straw that broke the camel's back), and then they will find a place in society where the rest of the country is comfortable seeing them excel (like the Irish being cops and firemen back in the day, or Asians running stores and salons now) and then, finally, full fledged acceptance as part of our country. Of course, that only lasts until someone of your heritage does something horrible, like Middle Easterners are experiencing now. On September 10th, they were just like the rest of us. On September 12th, they were huge security risks and "people of interest."
We're not really a melting pot, where we all combine into one. We all keep a certain amount of boundaries between those that we think are different from us. But this is a temporary feeling of fear and intolerance about Mexican people. Ignore the ignorant, live your life in a way you're proud of, and define for yourself what it means to be an American, a Mexican, or both.
Good luck.
If you're so proud of it, then why did you leave it?
it's not wrong
its only bad when you put you heritage above your nation.
having more pride and loyalty to your back ground than you do to the USA/Brazil/South africa is not good.
i argu with a friend of mine because she has more pride in her french heritage then her american upbringing.
There is a difference between being proud of where you are from and bragging that you and you former country were and are better than the USA. If it was so great, we wonder why you left. Add to the fact that some feel that you should stay and help reform Mexico. When we differ with Bush, we express our displeasure, most of us to not leave the country
Go back to mexico. I don't want you here. America... love it or leave it.
Nothing is wrong about being proud of where you come from..but when someone comes to the US to take advantage of all that it offers -- and then denigrates it -- that truly ticks me off. And I dont get how there can be excessive pride over a place that wasn't good enough to stay at! If it was bad enough to leave, then pride in it seems contrary to me.there's no logic in that.
People let their emotions overrule their head.
Here's you : I like de moaney here, de gringos no ak rite, like the good times we half in mejico,Maybe increez de Megsakins, decreez de Gringos- America okay now !
I'll give you an analogy. I am a Native Texan and as such I am fiercely proud of my Texas heritage (as most Texans are). However, when I go to another state I realize that most of them are equally proud of their heritage in their own state. If someone ask me where I'm from I proudly tell them, but its not something I loudly proclaim at every opportunity. I don't take the Lone Star Flag with me and march down the street. AND while I'm in that other state and see a fellow Texas who has broken their laws, I don't support him in that activity. If you came here to be a Mexican, go home. If you came here to be a Mexican-AMERICAN, then get with the program.
Personally I have a bit of disgust with the lack of family values that's been lacking or slacking with American children. Who obviously as well one day might consist of future generations not knowing how on earth to operate this great country. That made it what it is or was, depending on what will change, and if it truly is benefiting or just a major liability.
Whats so wrong of being proud of where you escaped too?
Your the perfect example of why America is so against Illegal aliens and those that won't and don't want to assimilate. America love it or F-off and leave
If a person is so proud of where they come from why stay here? Just visit awhile and go F-ing back home.
It all depends in the manner in which you show your pride.
One can rightly be proud of the contribution to your adopted country but dont try to cover up in areas of crime, disinterest in education etc
My Italian Grandparents were immigrants and I'm proud of it. Celebration of our heritage is what America is about.
Somewhere down the line of every American their families migrated to America. Every country with the culture they brought with them has been blended into our society including Mexican.
Being a American citizen on the other hand means we never let our heritage rise above our loyalty to America.
My family is originally from Ireland (though I am a 2nd generation citizen) and I have visited often. I'm very proud of my Irish name and background and I love the country and it's customs, however, I wouldn't live there. The religious wars and persecution are abominable and overall, this is a much better country to live and make a life and raise a family in. As such, my family has assimilated to American culture. We speak the language, we know the customs, we pay our taxes and we support our government (as a general rule). These are things most immigrants don't do and those are the things that bother most Americans. If you live in an English speaking country... learn English. If you live in a country that requires you to pay taxes... pay taxes. If there are laws in that country requiring you to take certain steps before you can legally work and become a citizen... take them. Don't just show up and expect the country to assimilate to YOU. People move to the states to have a better life and that requires change. If you don't want to change, stay where you're at. If you're willing to make the necessary changes and do it legally, then come on over and bring your culture with you, and ENJOY who you are and where you're from... but don't forget where you are and why you're here. That's all American's ask of you.
Note: If you're doing all of the above and people tell you to "go back to where you came from" everytime you talk about your culture and the place your from, remind them that you're here for a reason and, while every country has it's negatives, every country has it's postives too. But we American's do so enjoy our ignorance and the belief that we're infallible so don't expect much to change :). Hope this helps.
Of course you can love the country you came from. However, if you become a citizen here, to my mind you should put this country first. I don't believe in dual citizenship once a child who has it comes of age and can choose. I think it is a conflict of interest. However, I can't imagine anyone giving up affectionate feelings for where they grew up.
There are people who put a Mexican flag over a US post office. There are people who put a Mexican flag over a US flag, with the flag inverted, over a US school. There are people (British, these) who translated our anthem into Spanish AND changed the words to make it a protest song for open borders.
That is not just loving the country you came from. That is taking a shot at ours. I think any thinking person knows the difference.
Edgar I have no problem with people being proud of where they come from but I think the problem lies with people pushing their culture on others.
Since you are here legally and have obviously learned our language,it shows you have assimilated so I think you are home. Remember to have pride in the country in which you are a citizen too.
If you're so proud of your old home then why are you running away from it then ?
Who said it was wrong to have ethnic pride?
The issue I hear the most is the lack of assimilation by certain recent groups.
Our immigrant history is rich with peoples coming from all over the world to follow the american dream.
It is only recently that groups are coming setting up their own cities within cities. Flying foreign flags, refusing to speak our language.
To most doing those things are not demonstrating pride it's a refusal to become part of america like all the other immigrants have done.
