Are F1 visa holders allowed to engage in non-paid, not for credit, internships just for the experience of it?

There is nothing in return that the internship would offer and the position is not open on the job market; are there any regulations restricting such internships?
Thank you!

Answer:
You can volunteer all you want.
Because you are on F1 I assume you are a student, graduate or otherwise. The best solution is to ask the International Affairs Office at your university. They will know.

My best guess would be that you need to go on the OPT status (optional professional training) regardless of whether you are paid or not. It is not hard to get the OPT (which entitles you to work for 1 year, though it doesn't have to be continuous).
no, unless you plan to not be taking credit hours as well... you need to maintain you F1 status even if you are on an internship, or you need to get on OPT, or sign up for CPT (i think that what it is called), where you do like a semester or yr of work for pay or not, but not take classes....
consult your international student office if you are not quite sure.... but if you are still in status... you can engage in voluntary work, if you don't get paid.... I have done that before... it like learning for free in a work environment... but you still need 12credits for most school for undergrad or 9 for grad
Certainly - and internships in the US look great on your c.v.!

Best of luck!
You'll need to continue complying with all the regs about your F-1 (maintaining full time status, etc.). You'll also need to apply for OPT or CPT with your international office. We require EAD cards for all of our volunteers at my school.
