thats because britain no longer exists except in the mouths and mind of immigrants, i could never understand why the scottish said they where not british untill i lived in scotland. i was always proudly british, Now i am most definately english.

infact, in the uk, we have taken on all the immigrants such as asians, chineese, polish, turkish etc.

I work with a lot of people who's parents emigrated here.
No one I know would say they are British, they are English. They live in England and have little or nothing to do with Scotland Ireland or Wales.

Surely people can be both - I'm English and British. My country is England, but my nationality (as on a passport) is British. I guess British English is most exact.

In the Scottish Parliament - the MSP's want us to be Gay...not British...only a handful of them voted to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the ..Act of Union - while most of them wanted to celebrate being Gay & Transgendered... ?!! puzzled - so was I..

Oh no, I'm British, I was born in Britain 21 years ago, I've never seen myself as English, I've always seen myself as British. The immigrants do not see thmselves as British, they see themselves as Somalian, Kosovan, Polish, Lithuainian, they come here and refuse to accept our way of life!

Well I think to say "nobody wants to be British" is wrong as I am sure a survey of the entire population has not been carried out.
To be British is a relatively recent term, only going back 400 years or so. The whole aspect of Britishness is in itself very confusing for people.
Take the British Flag, the Union Flag (never call it the Union Jack!!!). It was the British Flag until the 1800 Act of Union with Ireland when the Flag of St Patrick was added. So now we have a flag representing two islands, Britain and Ireland. So now someone in Belfast can call themselves British which is politically true and Irish which is true in Geography terms. Then there is the the poor Welsh (from the island of Britain) are not represented on the flag at all . So many Welsh will fly the Welsh Flag and not the Union Flag and often call themselves Welsh and not British.
Our Olympic team are called TEAM GB - and yet is should be TEAM UK surely !!!!
Natives of the Isle of Man , Jersey, etc are not strictly part of the UK and yet have to have UK passports
The Nation Anthem is another mineflied. God Save The Queen is the British National Anthem so in some respect the English dont have one.
So you can see why some people want to be Irish, Welsh, Scottish, English and others want to be British.

But i don`t think it`s anything new .I don`t think i`m British i`m English and so are my family and i can`t remember a time people thought otherwise It`s no good blaming the immigrants either

Being only a small Island with crap weather for some unknown reason we were invaded by many peoples including the Vikings, Normans, Gerald (a bleak period in our history airbrushed out because of the embarrassment), we discovered a small piece of land we called America, and a few other distant places, but through all of this we kept fighting amongst ourselves until we all died of syphilis, on the plus side, at least we weren't French.
It is only the Muslim or African or Indian immigrants who call themselves "British" hours after arriving here. The winner of the Tate Modern art prize is a German lady, I was delighted to hear her say: "I am German but live in London" .Any Muslim , African, or particularly Indian Immigrant would be "British" by now.

That is incorrect. The reason Britishness was invented was not for immigrants. It is the Glue that keeps the Union together. And the Union is in danger of collapsing because of nationalistic talk such as this. The British term also serves as a term for people who have made this country their home.
So it is not pointful blaming immigrants for that. If everyone goes round saying I'm English or Scottish, there will be no Union to talk about. Other Countries Have proper names like France or Cuba and USA and such, but here if we split up the Union we would have to change the name of each piece.
So others who are not English or Welsh(say) would still identify. Otherwise they will invent another name for them or them for themselves Like Lahore English or Brazilian Scottish.
Life is not as straight as it looks. In France for instance there are many tribes but they are French or in Russia, they are all Russian that is why we have Britain for us Britons and NOT English or Scottish or Welsh.. See?
What i dont understand is that why cant polish stay in there own country! I wanna be british again! but no we are english or "multi cutural" well bulgarians hate polish and they jsut fight. 7 murders in 4 weeks so far. all immigrant scrabbols!
