The easiest way to know for sure,if you have been granted an extension to your UK visa,is to go home,and try to come back. Keep in touch.
WHY DONT U GO IN TO THEM AND ASK THEM.
If you submitted your application bundle in-time, i.e. before your student leave expired, then it doesn't matter that the visa expired. Keep the acknowledgement letter from the Home Office as proof that you have made a valid application. If you submitted it out of time, after your visa expired, then you are overstaying and the application will be refused and you will not have any appeal rights to appeal the decision. Best thing is to ring them on the general number.
It's not clear from your question if you submitted your application in time, before your visa expired. If so, then you're OK until they make a decision. Your visa will continue to be valid until you get a decision on your application. If your visa had already expired, then you are an overstayer. Your application is likely to be refused. You should go to your student welfare department for guidance.
