Why is it that only 57% of Hispanics think that learning English is important to be part of American society?
Here is the study (notice that it is conducted by a Spanish organization too), so please don't tell me that I don't have stats to back up my claim:

Answer:
I think most of Mexican immigrants know that in order to function in this country, they must learn English. Most Mexican immigrants want to become as "American" as possible in order to assimilate. However, as much as they want to learn English and assimilate into the American culture, they do have a very profound sense of pride in their own culture and hope to instill those same values in their children. Mexican immigrants are afraid of losing their culture. Wouldn't you be afraid if you were born in another country with a different culture and values, and then came to American and had to change all that? I myself am Mexican-American, meaning I am of Mexican descent but born in America. I am a 4th generation American born Mexican in my family, so I don't have very many ties to Mexico, but the traditions, cultures, and values have been passed down to me and I cherish those as much as the American values, traditions, and cultures I have learned. Maybe they are afraid because they think it will be forced upon them, when they get here and realize how "freer" and better life is here in America, I'm sure that most understand the benefits of assimilation.
Probably because everything is bilingual anymore anyway!!
Who cares what language they speak? As long as they know enough english to get thru the day I am fine with that.
Most immigrants hold tightly to their language cuz its the first and more comfortable language they know. Why should we look down on that?
I believe it is important and I agree that it is in everyone's best interest to learn English if they are going to live in the US
That is not the matter at hand. I read a post about the mayor of LA giving a speech in Spanish and in English. I don't think he, or most, are suggesting that people never try to learn English.
I am still learning French, and it is really helpful that there are people in France that speak English there to help me.
I am spending money there, even if I have not mastered the language completely, yet, the French tourism industry caters to tourists for the bottom line (money).
Why do you begrudge people speaking Spanish? There is a big world out there, maybe you should get out and travel abit, it will expand your mind. You can't make it illegal to speak Spanish or any other language in this country, is that what you want?
My family came over from Poland and we made every effort to learn English to be more functional part of society, I love my native language but in AMERICA we need to speak ENGLISH which is the chosen language of the country. My dear friend are from India and have only been here for 8 months and they are already fluent in English to more functional in Society. SO my answer would be LAZINESS.
I think that the study was more than likely misinterpreted by the reporting agency. It was probably intended to find out if Hispanics think that learning English is important to becomming an American Citizen. In which case no, it isn't. The citizenship tests are offered in Spanish. As far as aclamating oneself into the American Culture as it were, yes it is important only because you cannot always find a convenient translator, and of the Americans who claim they speak spanish, only about one third speak it fluently enough to translate. In response to your why question, however, I think it is more important for you to do a little more research to find out if these statistics are exactly what you think they are, and not purposely phrased for you to think they mean something different. If you'd like, I can do the research for you and find you any statistic you'd like to say anything you want. It really isn't hard.
why? I don't know.
I Am sure when they asked part of American society..
They misunderstand it.
Is a Continent named America...
America starts with: North America Central America and ends in South America so.
I say part of United States of America sounds better to me.
I was born in Central America so since I born I always know that I was part of America...
But is different like been part of United States of America.
So maybe just miss interpretation.
Am I wrong?
I think it is part of their culture to be proud of who they are and display this pride by not conforming to other cultures.
you know, most people who post something against Hispanics (who are illegal) do so because of taxes and such, but you, you're not concerned about illegals not paying their taxes...you're worried about Hispanics not learning English! sweety, who's to say that the other 43 % doesn't think it's not important to learn English? some may not want to learn, some may want to learn... you obviously know English so don't worry about the others who don't...but if you want to those whose English is limited then great...but don't go about saying the ones who don't know English is because they think it's not important...
I dont care what language they use on their own time. If you want to do something outside your home and cant speak English we should just ignore you.
cuz the other 43% dont think its important.
dont call me "brother".
Some people are to lazy to learn, some to old, some not educated, or they like me , have a hearing problem that makes it very difficult to learn.
ignorance
I quote, "if this is not due to Hispanics arrogance regarding their "sacred Spanish language", then what is it?"
When you make statements like this, it sounds like an "us vs. them" mentality..
Do you have a problem with Hispanics in general, or just those who can't or refuse to speak English? Because it seems like you are generalizing.I know many Hispanics who speak fluent English..And prefer to speak English over Spanish. Many 2nd and 3rd generation Latinos/Latinas speak only English..Stop assuming all Hispanics are ignorant, come from Pueblitos in Mexico and are barefoot...Geez
English is an ugly language. Even though I'm fluent in it (I'd say, to the risk of sounding arrogant, proficient in it), I don't like the way it sounds.
It reminds me of a dog barking.
When people speak in English, it sounds as if they all are fighting all the time. That's why many people refuse to learn a language that sounds so bestial and lacking in inflection, a true barbarian tongue.
Because many have no interest in being part of American society. They dream of recreating American society in their own image.
Well let me ask you this, should it be expected or required by other countries that us Americans learn their language before we visit or move to their country. If you have ever visited a foreign country, how important was it to you to learn their language? Just a thought I had while reading your question.
