On the border crossing pregnant to have babies here issue, whey can Hong Kong discuss it logically, & not us?
Clearly it is the benefits and schools for their children that draws them here, NOT only the jobs. Yet there is huge resistance here to removing those magnets.

Interesting article Dar, I think here in the states passions and tempers are running high, which means logical talks will be out of the question. I think we are past the point of logical discussions. And you are right, most of us know that education, and benefits are the magnets, I mean we have heard of reports of women just crossing the border and going straight to the hospital to give birth, clearly shows she is only doing it for the "automatic" citizenship for the child. (and all that comes with it)
It will be interesting to see how this situation in Hong Kong plays out and if their new policies will be effective.
Well #1 there is a misinterpretation in amendment 14. It state that anyone that is born on American soil or naturalized AND (I emphasize the AND) is following the local jurisdiction (i.e. and following the laws...) is considered a citizen. So technically, these children are not legal.
Discussing the problem in one thing ...we here rage incessantly about it becasue there is such divission between citizens and government.
In China, if you get in the way, the run over you with a tank or whatever. I have to beleive there is a middle ground somewhere in between.
I believe the reason here is about the benefit to those that hire them and want them for votes ...and the loss goes to the middle class. They are suckers for punishment. Working so hard to pay their taxes, take care of their kids and pay the bills ...they don't have time to worry about politics and what it might mean for them and their kids in the end. Ostriches by any other name we have become. At least most of us.
