I think it is just a financial thing to make sure you don't go for government services right off the bat. You should check with the country you are going to, though.
Going to new country is difficult because you will probably meet a system that is completely different from yours,i mean the values,culture,tradition etc so staying with members of your family at the initial stage is crucial,they will help in blending you into the system.
It is advisable to stay with them at the initial stage
how old are you? i know that any one filing for a status change must be sponsored, it is part of the paper work of the immigration dept, my husband had to be sponsored, but trust me, he didnt move in with them. if you are an adult, of course you can. the sponsorship is just to make shure that you dont have to go on welfare while in a foreign country.
