How can someone become a U.S citizen, when been here for years, especially for a student?

What I mean is how can a student attending college here in the U.S can become a citizen. This student have been living here for years, I do know that by some relatives but that's out of the question since that student is already 18 years old, or by getting adobted that is also out of the question. Is their anyway that a student by himself or herself could apply somewhere to become a U.S citizen.

Answer:
lets hope for the Dream Act to pass.
Is this student here on a student visa, or is he/she an illegal alien? Your question can't be answered until you say which is the case.
If he is here illegally then his best bet is to return to his home country and attempt to immigrate legally.
