Someone needs to settle this stupid debate?
Answer:
In order to have US citizenship, a person must prove that they give up citizenship in all other countries to which they have claim, by the time they reach adulthood. In other words, part of the process of becoming an american citizen would be that he formally renounce his citizenship in both india and australia.
I went through a similar process. I was born in germany while my parents were stationed overseas. Until I reached age 18, I enjoyed dual citizenship. But, when I became 18, I had to fill out a bunch of paperwork that rescinded my right to german citizenship.
A friend of mine was born in the US to cuban parents. She actually did not obtain citizenship until she was age 35. Instead, she opted for permanent resident alien status until she got married and kept her possible right to cuban citizenship. The issue is fuzzy since her family basically fled the cuban genocide when castro took over and took up residence in the US. They hoped one day to return when castro's illegal coupe was stopped by the UN, so they kept the doorway to cuban citizenship open. That never happened and her parents died, still waiting for justice in cuba. Their daughter, wisely, made the decision that return to a normalized cuba would never happen in her lifetime so she finally became an american citizen.
you give up other citizenships when you become american
i don't think that the u.s. will recognize the other citizenships, but the other countries will.
He would have to give up his citizenship of the other countries when he because a US citizen.
No, with all civilized nations persons are allowed to keep their previous citizenships. However in some primitive religious states, especially in Africa and the Middle East, one would have to abandon their other citizenships before taking a new one.
To become a citizen to the US he would have to renounce the citizenship of Australia and India. The only way to have dual citizenship with the United states is if you were born in another country to American Parents - similar to the situation was friend was born into as an Indian - Australian
when he becomes a citizen of this country then he has to give up his citizenships.
