Republican presidential contender Tom Tancredo on Monday said "it's not impossible" to deport the estimated 12 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.

Such action would take years and would be difficult but could be accomplished, he said.

The Colorado congressman, however, argued that tougher border security and a crackdown on employers would reduce the need for mass deportations and encourage such immigrants to return to their native countries willingly.

"It's attrition through enforcement," he said.

Tancredo described his views on illegal immigration and other issues during a meeting with Des Moines Register editors and reporters.

Illegal immigration is the cornerstone of Tancredo's bid for the presidency - it's an issue he described as a "clash of civilizations."

He said illegal immigration and a lack of assimilation among immigrants here legally threaten the United States nationally and globally.

"I think we are the last, best hope of Western civilization," he said.

Tancredo said legal immigration should be curbed at 250,000 people per year to ensure proper assimilation. More than 700,000 were granted U.S. citizenship in 2006, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Tancredo said that people who describe him as xenophobic are wrong and that he fully supports diversity.

He cited his Italian heritage and its importance to him and his family as examples of his respect for ethnic and cultural identity. Tancredo's elders always stressed the importance of assimilation into American culture, he said.

"You can't have diversity as the only national character," he said. " ... You need something that holds us together."

His remarks came on the tail end of a weekend campaign swing through Iowa.
Illegal invaders go home. Legal immigrants assimilate. Tancredo is right - you absolutely can deport 12 million criminals. Build the wall. Cut off the social aid. Punish employers. Stop educating their illegal spawn. Deport people you catch - the rest will go home. Without free social services or work - they would be forced to leave.

Answer:
Yes I agree with his Assessment. and when did impossible
feats cause Americans to cringe in a corner and whine like day old puppies.!
12 million is way off, i'll say there are atleast 30 million. Do the math, 3 million or so a year for 20 years wow, thats 60 million. ouch.
I will be voting for Tom Tancredo
Tom is the man. I believe his plan would work.
Yes, of course it is possible to do.

Putting employers of illegal immigrants in prison, and refusing illegal immigrants all public services would eliminate 60+% of the problem (they would be forced to leave), the rest could be gradually forcibly removed rather easily (and once something like that started many more would simply leave on their own).
Of course, it is possible. It may take some time, but it needs to be done.
In the 50's sweeps to detain and deport illegal aliens were very effective. Estimates are 10 times as many self-deported.
Cut off all benefits, jobs and perks of being here.
Increase and publicize the efforts to detain and deport.
Heavily penalize employers of illegal aliens and those who harbor them.
Offer a reward for reporting employers of illegal aliens.
It is past-time we closed the borders and allow legal and only legal immigrants to remain here.
I am not for deporting 12-30 million illgals but I am for fining and jailing those that hire the illgals. When the market place drys up the illigals would make their home the same way they came.
Tancredo his smart because he knows who fool the people
I agree..
Yes..you can. Not all at once.not overnight. It didn't happen at once and not overnight..but it can be done. Maybe not perfectly..maybe a few slip through the cracks...but it's no excuse to abandon the law just because it's not perfect. We don't catch every speeder on the road but it's no excuse to not have speed limits and try to catch as many as possible.
Yes, it is possible, but I believe it is impractical, financially. Many of the people who have illegally crossed the border are motivated to become assimilated. I feel it would be better in our interest to secure the border and provide assimilation education for those who come forward. Not as a reward but as a choice. That education would cost them and it would be the requirement to avoid expulsion.
I am not sure you could label people in America as Xenophobic, as only the Indians are native. But our national existence and definition require protection if we are to remain what we are. The final answer will still have to be politically survivable.
I agree with him about you can return them. You do it like they came here. One two or twenty at a time. Don't give them work with out real papers that you can only get by crossing the border legally and they will have to go home. Tancredo and the rest of the republicans that had been in power for 12 yrs didnt do a thing about this. All 12 million didn't come across this year. Another republican(Reagan) made the law breakers legal last time. Bush's sister in law is Hispanic
Tom has my full support and I agree with him.
Tom has my vote,Yes they can be it didn't happen over night so they wont be deported over nite but it can be done. Just have 2 have the right person will the bal-s to stand with the USA citizens and fight this invasion.
yes, I'm in full agreement with him. It can be done,as it was done before.
Take away the perks and they will self deport.
It's obvious Tancredo and almost all anti-illegals will say this. But it will never happen, it's a fact.
That only makes him look bad when he "tries" to run for president.
I am comfortable that we will not have a president who says stupid things like "we should deport 12 million immigrants" because it is not realistic and it's delusional.
