How do I legally change my name?

I want to change my name. My legal name is hard to pronounce. & I also want to change my last name. So how do I change my first and last name??? Do anyone know where to go in San francisco or what is the process/??? I've been dying to do this for years...

Answer:
Are you over 18 ? If not you cannot do this
I think you need to go to the Social Security Office to do that.
Its very easy, and the courthouse will have the papers or get them from the website below. It will cost you $320 to file unless you qualify for a fee waiver (again ask the clerk for the forms). After you file the papers you have to run the Order to Show Cause in the newspaper (ask the clerk when you file which ones are acceptable, the Chronicle will be the most expensive). After it runs for 4? weeks you go to court on your court date and the Judge signs the order.
If you want a legal change it has to be through the court system. Exactly HOW you would need to go about it, though, sorry I don't know. If you have a lawyer friend--or even acquaintance--ask him/her what to do. Or ask friends if they know any lawyers to ask. Maybe one of the other answerers can tell you exactly how to do it.
But, having said that, I'd like to encourage you not to do it. I also have a difficult-to-pronounce last name. It's really annoying when I get mail that misspells my name, or when someone looks at the name then tries to pronounce it but mangles it. But I'm use to it by now. Also, don't forget, it's as much a part of you as your eye color or height. It's distinctive, ESPECIALLY if it's an unusual foreign name like mine. When you get older you may well regret changing it.
it cost like around 1,000 dollars to get your name changed expessially when you want to change your first name and your last name and you are going to go through alot of paper work.
You'd want to change a name like "Black Widow"? Scaring off your dates, is it?

You'd have to change your name 'back home' if you aren't American, I believe, then get your documents changed based on that. I don't see how you can have one legal name in the country where you are a citizen and have a different 'legal' name here.

Here you would petition the court, but it is a slam dunk, generally.
