Whats the difference between first- and second- generation immigrants?
Answer:
well what the two answerers in the top said and too that they ( second generation ) consider the country in which their parents immigrated to as theirs and usually do not feel any connection to the place form which their parents are from ... many even forget the language of their parents and get accustomed to speaking only the language of the country in which they were born ( no the country of their parents ) .
they usually acquire all the traditions of the country they were born into and learn to live the same way in which all others normal citizens live , they become part of the country and all traditions .
through all the American history millions of immigrants have become part of America and most of them . Chinese , Italians , Irish Germans and everyone else faced the same difficulties ... many of them were considered not assimilable and were leveled as such by those which had faced the same problems before them ...
and by the way i also think that it is untrue that most Asians already speak English when they arrive . i have met so many who been here for years and still are not able to dominate the language .
Well, I think first will be if you come to the country from somewhere else, second will be if your parents are immigrants.
(For USA) First generation means they are the first generation born in the US (homegrowns). Their parents are the immigrants.
It depends upons the cultural background of the first generation.
For example, modern NorthEast Asians (Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans) have a very high assimilation rate into American culture. Most of them studied English before arriving in America. Many Japanese can write better English than Americans. I know of Japanese that speak nearly perfect English after just 3 months of being in the U.S.. Asians' grasp of the English language and their value of education help in making the U.S. a wealthier country.
However, there are many cultures that resist assimilation because they feel their own culture is superior to ours. Of course, unlike them, we are not ignorant. We know that their culture is not superior if they are coming from a poor crime ridden county.
To say that modern orientals already know english when they come to this country is not quite true and you are implying that they come from the planes and into the Universities and that is not true, most oriental inmigrants have a rudimentary knowledge of English,or very little to none, and they usually start businesses, were they work very hard to put their children thru college.Every ethnic group that comes here has contributed something good to this country.
