I would call a lawyer ASAP. If someone steals your identity... it can cost you thousands to fix what damage can be done.
You need to go to your local SSA office and notify them of what happened. Then you should also get a copy of your credit report to see if there are any suspicious activities, loans, etc done in your name.
I understand you should file a police report because it allows you to file in your credit report to block things the thief does with your numbers. However, you need to keep checking your credit report, and you might have trouble with your taxes, if you are assumed to have made what others besides you earned. Keep copies of the police report so you can send it to people as problems pop up.
Contact Social Security immediately to report it.

You could be liable for whatever amount of loans or crimes the ID thief commits.
