Once he has a working permit, he can obtain a social security number. This is for tax purposes so that he can work and pay money into the system. It is easy to get right away.
As far as all the negative comments are concerned, most people don't realize that to bring someone into the country they must be sponsored by a citizen, or immigrant in good standing. Aside from criminal backgrounds there is the financial side of the application (affidavit of support) which is quite clear. You must be making more than xxxx dollars in order to sponsor someone.
If the immigrant draws from ANY goverment welfare (inlcuding medicare) or social security program (SSI) within the first 10 YEARS, that money must be repaid by the sponsor!
This is true even if the person was here illegally and then converts to immigrant status. They must have a sponsor willing and capable of repaying the government for any aid given.

I THINK the Green Card is the same as a residency. In the online news this morning an immigrant woman received her emergency Green Card because her husband is missing in Iraq (she was about to be deported). To get the SS card, go to your local Social Security Administration office, as you will need an SS number to start to work.

actually no. usualy they give these working permits temporarily first so these types of illegal aliens won't be deported during transfering of documents. It wont deny his resident card for nothing because of this. But if he has a criminal record or a fraud if getting married just for papers, not for "love" then they would deny this resident card and he would be deportable. hope this helps in the future! :)

To all you imbeciles who think he can already receive social security benefits, you have to work in the US full time for five years to even be eligible and must be a citizen. Grow a brain you idiots! Your average immigrant knows a lot more about the legal process and branches of government then you did when you graduated from high school. Also, most of you probably aren't even eligible for social security benefits either, but I guess you don't know how it all works. I guess it'll be a surprise one day when you go to apply.
In answer to the question, wait for your interview, then apply for a social security number. It will take weeks to come in as they now have to be verified with homeland security. It's a pain in the **** as most places won't hire you without out, even though the department of homeland security says you can be hired without it temporarily if you have your work authorization and the letter from social security stating you applied.
