How does one get a dual citizenship?

My mother was a American and I understand I can have a dual citizenship. What are the advantages and disadvantages? How do I get one?

Answer:
My Mother was American and my Father is Canadian I was born in the states ..........they applied to the gov of Canada and the granted it when I was 14.....
you have to take a test in a government office or somethin my parents did it there dutch/canadian
What country are you from? You could get a dual citizenship depending on your home country and thier rules and if they allow dual citizenship. Check with your embassy or consulate.
if you are over 18, your mother can sponsor you for a green card/residence permit.

If you are under 18, you can probably get citizenship based on being born by an American mother.

Check with the US embassy with your exact details.

Advantages - Able to live and work in US and have US passport

Disadvantage - US citizens pay taxes on worldwide income. But only an issue if you make over $80,000 per year and wrok in a low tax country
