Do you agree with giving UK citizenship to anybody who will do some community work?

Immigrants should do community work to help them settle before being granted UK citizenship, Chancellor Gordon Brown has said.
Will the indigenous British people accept this obvious invitation to more immigrants ?Statement made by Gordon Brown 27 February 2007

Answer:
I totally disagree with Gordon Brown over this. Community work is something that should be given to people who have committed a misdemeanor but haven't been sent to prison. The immigrants should have to learn English and prove that they are willing to integrate into our society. If Gordon Brown had to live among these people like we, the public have to, he may have a different attitude to letting them in. We have one of the smallest countries in the world but more and more immigrants want to come here. We are losing what little National Pride we have left because we are a ''multi cultural' society. Someone recently asked the question "what is British culture"? I could have answered that once, but not anymore. We have no say in anything that goes on despite the fact that it affects us every day whether at work or at leisure. This problem is never going to go away. We need a leader who puts the indigenous population first and who doesn't worry that the world will see him as a bad person if he said NO MORE IMMIGRANTS.
Whilst I am no Gordon Brown fan, I think you are quoting out of context. What he said was, as part of the immigration process they should do community work. There was no suggestion that in itself, community work would qualify anyone for entry. Indeed, he is being quite right wing about the process, suggesting an English speaking ability, again as part of the package.I think in his search for the leadership he is picking up on what a majority of people think.
I don't think he meant 'Come here, do a bit of voluntary work, get citizenship'. I think what he meant was an ideal way for immigrants to get to know the area in which they are settled and for the community to get to know them would be for them to do some community work, a way of integrating themselves into the community more quickly, having already been accepted to live in the UK.

It won't encourage more immigrants to come to the UK because they will still need to satisfy other immigration requirements. In fact, it may even act as a deterrent to some.
The immigrants have to meet another requirements too, right? If yes, then the community will benefit from it, plus the immigrants will get more accommodated in the new environment.
Don't listen to a word Ebeneezer Brooon Say's ...he knows he has lost out to Cameron - who has come up with the Border Patrol idea... The simple fact is ...Most of us in the UK - Don't wont any more immigrants - legal or illegal.
I don't agree to this at all. However being of English descent and a US citizen I'd love to immigrate to England and get citizenship if it is that easy. Can you tell me how to accomplish this?
I don't agree with this because, as a South African citizen moving to the UK next month on a British Ancestry visa, i intend to work hard for my citizenship in 5 years. My mother works at a nonprifit organisation here in South Africa and the organisation has experienced a lot of people applying for volunteer work visas, being granted them, but then just coming into the country and working somewhere else.
Brown's spouting what he knows the people want to hear but as soon as he gets in his excuse for a government will just carry on doing what they like best, milking and ignoring the public, does everyone in this country now walk about with their heads up their r'ses??? we're living under a dictatorship now and we have enough citizens of our 'own' being neglected through parasites like Brown & Blair without inviting any more.
I think it should be an EU PASSPORT for anyone who does community work.

For example: Abdul - paint that fence and we'll give you an appropriate EU passport....
Later: Great job Abdul - here's your British passport.
or F**k Me Abdul - what a bloody mess. Did you use a brush or your c**k? No matter - here's a French passport for you.
i dont agree.!
Some people have got completely the wrong end of the stick over this- the idea of doing community work is only PART of the overall British Citizenship process, they still have to go through everything else as well- it's just a further part to get people used to this country. At no point has anyone said that it's going to be easier to gain British citizenship- stop being so bloody paranoid every time there's something with the word "immigration" in it.

The Daily Mail makes you angry because it wants to make money!
You've got it wrong mate, just as this government have. Immigrants should do the test of life, (that is the test that is prescribed by the government for immigrants to become British Citizens). Community work, definitely no this is for criminals not for legal immigrants, also to be made to do work for free (I thought slavery was abolished in Britain years ago). It some how does not seem right to make immigrants or expect immigrants to do work for free, when millions of our own idle British Citizens don't even want to get out of bed to work for a wage.
I AM AN AMERICA LIVING IN AMERICA AND I SAY HELL NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I KNOW MANYBRITTS VERY COOL PEOPLE DONT LET YOUR COUNTRY BECOME LIKE THIS ONE TAKE A STANCE MY FRIEND
community work doesn't mean anything! That's why Britain has problems with its "British" terrorists
No.
Hi - you misunderstood the statement. Brown is suggesting immigrants do community work IN ADDITION TO fulfilling all the other requirements.

It isn't that easy to get British citizenship anymore. They've made it a lot harder over the past couple of years.

Now, you have to be in the country as a permanent resident for at least three years, take and pass an ESOL, then pass a "Britishness" test. Then if you pass that, you can APPLY for citizenship. You cannot have been out of the UK for more than 270 days in the past 3 years or 450 days in the past five. You cannot have committed a criminal offense - anywhere. You have to have two good (British) character references. Only then will you be considered a candidate for a UK passport, and even then it is up to the discretion of the Home Office whether they want to grant it or not.
