Should a Green Card Holding resident of the US have to visit the US once in 12 months?

my question arises from the fact that the law (as has been communicated to me) provides that a Green Card holder needs to visit the US at least twice an year or risk the cancellation of Green Card Residsent status.

Answer:
Remember that the correct title of Green Card is Permanent Resident Card. It presumes you are going to be resident permanently in the USA. Anyone who is out of the USA for more than 12 months (six months in some cases) will be considered to have abandoned their residency status. The only way to get it back is to re-apply.
Tear up Green Card.....Stay where you are.......
No. not visit the USA but should spend more than half the yeart in the USA. Also be able to prove they were there.
That's correct. A Green Card holder is an immigrant. Immigrants are expected to actually live in the country they've immigrated to. If you reside outside the United States for a lengthy period of time you have abandoned your immigrant status. It's the law and it's correct policy.
wait up guys
what if he joined the military and is deployed
or works for a multi national that sent him somewhere?
I think so, yes. Otherwise how can you say you are a resident? We don't give permanent placeholders short of citizenship. There are a lot of people who really WANT to be here.
A resident must (unless prior approval from immigration) maintain a US residency. "Visiting" does not qualify for a residency.

After one year outside the US it is up to the alien to prove that he/she maintained a real residency in the US.

Under one year, it is up to the government to disprove the alien's claim.

If you are not going to live here why have the card?
If you plan on stayin outside the US for more than a year you can apply for a RE-entry permit that will allow u to be gone for 2 years.
THE WAY AMERICA IS TODAY ANYONE HOLDING A GREENCARD SHOULD HAVE TO REPORT BI-WEEKLY AT THE LEAST
