UK immigration of adult son from US?

I've read the H.O. website, but can't figure out if I can sponsor my son and his wife to live in the UK. I am married to a British man and have indefinite leave to stay in the UK. My son is an IT specialist and my daughter-in-law wants to study for her doctorate here. I know she can get a student visa, but that doesn't allow her to stay. We own 3 houses and 2 businesses, so are financially stable. Neither of us have ever claimed any benefits.

Answer:
Let your daughter in law get a student visa and come over to study. You could offer your son a job just to get him here.
In your situation you should not have a problem as he is also in a specialist job.
I believe the short answer to that is NO. Your daughter in law should go for a student visa with her husband as a dependant. If future circumstances lead them to work in the UK on work permits then they may get to apply for ILR on the basis of long stay.

Additionally - reading between the lines - I take it that you and your son (and daughter-in-law) are US citizens. Sadly you can't just "offer him a job" because as a foreign national he would require a work permit - and you'd have to demonstrate that he has skills that no EU citizen possesses.
Cant he just go and stay as long as he likes? I thought with certain countries visas can be obtained for extended, if not indefinite periods of time?
