Why are Americans so conservative, and to a point extremist when discussing views on illegal immigration?
Answer:
My answer to this is to the point.. With out imigration we as Americans would not. I say emphaticlly NOT have a nation.. It was the imigrants who came to Ellis Island and help us become what we have today. Please I dont want you to think I am not a good American. I am, I spent time in the Military and even though I am a Democrat I support my president because he is the leader of my country right or wrong.. Any way back to the question... I have been a tower crane operator for 40 years and I work 150 feet to 600ft in the air and I can see all the workers. While building 3 mi Island in Pennsylvania with all american Union Workers you could see the slackers.. While working in Florida in 2006 (South beach) at 265 feet in the air.. All the workers except the Bosses were imigrants (some eligle) but not one slacker. What should we do? Who really has the answer but the pay taxes) and they contribute to the community.. Hey bad apples? But so do we as "White and or Black" good communities... I hope I have given you my feelings as a true American on this sore subject.. Grant in Pennsylvania
Do you mean can't we all agree with you?
In a guess, it's doubtful.
Seriously!
No, not when the future of our country is at stake. Illegal is illegal. Period. Amnesty should not be an option when our resources are being drained and our culture is being compromised. YOUR view, not mine, is that of an extremist.
Listen to what you said, 'illegal immigration'
Nope. I take it extremely personally when millions of invaders try to steal my children's opportunities and then say they didn't want, need, or deserve them anyway.
Do you really believe that unemployment is only 5%? I don't.
Yes, we can be a little more moderate. But only after we fully understand the issue, yet don't have the fortitude or ba!!s to determine our views!
So I'm an extremist because I want people to obey our immigration laws? I'm an extremist when I state FACTS about how these criminals are destroying our country? I don't think so!
Amnesty is wrong! It was wrong in 1986 and it will always be wrong!
We have laws and we expect to be a nation that honors the rule of law. People who do not respect our laws about entry into the country are not going to honor other laws... are they?
Conservatives just want European style borders. You need to think more European.
Glad to see you are supporting Fred Thompson for president.
Don't call it "conservative." Just look at Europe. Xenophobia knows no ideology.
I agree with you, though. I see some terribly racist things on Y!A. Sometimes it's obvious the poster is just a troll, but other times I think the question asker doesn't realize he's being racist because it's how he really feels.
American anti-immigration sentiment isn't nearly as bad as in other countries, especially Europe, so I do take some issue with your question.
'Moderate' views on immigration is why we have so many illegal aliens here in the first place.
Your question is vague... who has said what that you feel is "extreme?"
Seems to me, the fact that we have tolerated 12 MILLION foreign nationals to come here illegaly shows us to be moderate in our actions. Name one other country that has/would allow this massive disregard for its law and borders??
If Amnesty is given - we will not recognize America
in 10-20 years - we will have been out voted
and our most cherished freedom will become our
tool of destruction
even for the party in control now
We allow more than a million people a year in here legally. We've already granted amnesty once and it obviously didn't work because they never inforced the law. We have sat back hoping there would be a peaceful way to "ignore" the other issues of illegal immigration and instead of getting better.it's gotten worse. We have done everything from the liberal and moderate view and it's not working. We have bent every law, looked the other way, and they still DEMAND MORE..so no..if "nice" and moderate worked..we wouldn't be where we are. It doesn't work and everyone from the government on down the line has done everything but get tough. Nobody likes to be the bad a.but it's obvious logic and rational thinking doesn't get through so there isn't much else left to work with.
when has illegal activity ever been good for the US ? if some one is here illegal . they should be deported back to the country they came from , also anyone here illegal . should receive nothing no employment , not school , nothing , and if they give birth to a child here , in no way should that child be granted citizenship , also give the border agents orders shoot to kill . one other thing , why in America should i have to push 1 to continue this call in English , ?? it should be if you cant speak English , hang up and learn it
I am all for people who come to America - but we have to realistic about it.
When my great great grandparents arrived from Ireland, they went though a checkpoint at Ellis Island. They didn't sneek in - they made it legal. I think most people in America realize we are a nation if immigrants and we are proud of that heritage. What I hear most people saying is that we have to have some ability to hold those coming to America accountable if they don't go through the legal process.
Border states of Mexico spend billions on health care, welfare benefits, and on alot of other things to help people who come here illegally. Do you think that it is right that legal citizens pay taxes to support other people who don't respect the laws of the USA enough to come here legally? This is the arguement.
Additionally, what do we do about all of the illegal immigrants who come here and truly do need medical care and other services? Well, we treat them! The problem is that legal residents - citizens of the USA - taxpayers - who cannot afford insurance get NOTHING to help with their healthcare costs.
Personally, I am happy to live in a country where other people want to come to and I welcome them. The reality is that we have a hard time, as a country, taking care of our own without adding to the burden.
Moderation is easy to talk about if you don't have to worry about your job, your health, or where you live. Those of us in the foodservice industry understand that the flow of illegal immigrants is crippling the foodservice industry in many respects. Those of us who pay taxes and are self-employed generally cannot afford insurance. My inner city neighborhood is facing a crisis because the landlords are seeing their rentals housing more people than is safe.
Moderation is good - but only if we all understand the problem and can see how to address it for the good of ALL - until then, moderation isn't an option.
Immigrants who come here illegally affect all of us - and we have to decide how long we will tolerate the current situation. I hope there is a solution that benefits ALL of us - legal or illegal citizens.
There are two extreme positions on illegal immigration. One favored by mostly liberals, and one favored mostly by conservatives. The extreme liberal policy is to allow almost all illegal aliens to stay in our country and to be put on a path to citizenship. As unlikely as it seems this position is held by the ultra-liberal Senator Kennedy and by Republican US Senators, McCain, Graham, Spector, Kyl, Martinez, and our president. This amnesty policy is promoted by the Kennedy/Bush Senate bill.
The extreme conservative viewpoint is to enforce our immigration laws, secure our border with Mexico, and to deport all illegal aliens. They believe that all illegal aliens are criminals and that the illegals should be put in a line for citizenship behind those immigrants who applied legally for citizenship! They would rather have no bill passed, then the fraudulent Senate amnesty bill.
Most Americans view on this issue is between the extremes. We should allow only those illegal aliens to be put on a path to citizenship who have job skills that we need, or have college degrees, or who work in the agriculture industry where we need more workers. Our policy should be to enforce our laws, increase deportations, build the border fence, and deny the illegals jobs and benefits. This policy is called enforcement through attrition, and is held by most of the anti-amnesty Congresspeople.
The Miss Universe pageant should have opened your eyes to how Mexico feels about the USA. The Mexico City crowd actually booed the USA contestant, for nothing more than being from America.
A few years ago Mexico City had a devastating earthquake and requested aid in the form of food, water and clothing, but when it came to stuff coming from the U.S. they didn’t want it and it was shipped back. These are people who lost everything and still hate the United States; except when it comes to the billions of dollars we give them to keep them from being another third world nation.
The last time amnesty was given to illegal immigrants it was stated to be a one time event and they pass it allowing approximately 4 million into the country; now it’s only around 20 years later and another stated one time event propose 12 million more.
Now look at the financial problem. Schools are given a specific amount per day a student attends school, and yet they allow illegal’s into schools because the government will still pay for them. So now you have students that don’t speak English and require a high paid teacher and course work such as books and classroom materials. Say the school gets $50 per day for each student; then it doesn’t take a genius to realize the English classrooms are getting $40; while the Spanish classrooms get $60 because of the extra expense involved. Schools in CA were asked years ago to identify unauthorized students and there response was its not our job.
Just think of all problems they would cause. Were already paying 30% of our income in taxes, do you really want to go to 50%.
Those who are for allowing them in always seem say that people that are against it are against immigration. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Were all for legal immigration. That means ask to come here, be prepared to contribute (get a job) and feel free to embrace you own culture, but learn ours, and finally learn to speak English.
If you lived in Los Angeles like I do you would know why I am totally against amnesty and illegal immigration. I was robbed at gunpoint by two illegal aliens. They have turned this city into a cesspool. It used to be nice here. Now you can't walk down the street without taking your life in your hands. There are hispanic gangs with thousands of members. There is graffitti everywhere. I am not being racist, just stating facts. 50% of gang members are illegal aliens. 95% of homocide warrants are for illegal aliens. Many of them drive while drunk. I could go on and on.
Most people are ignorant to the real facts and rely soly on lies fabricated by xenophobics.
Like some people here that blame undocumented illegals for everything (crime, disease, etc).
They just dont have the capacity to understand that we all can live and work together to keep this the country, that I love, as strong as ever.
Like John S. who said he was robbed at gun point by
illegals , as if he could tell just by looking at their faces
whether they have papers or not.
note: most illegals do pay taxes.
because they don't belong here! and the statistics for unemployment only show people drawing unemployment, it does not say anything about the ones out of work who do not collect unemployment!!and if they were gone there would be "0" unemployment, crime would go down, schools would improve again, citizens who really need help could get some etc.
I think we are way too liberal as it is . what do you want, open borders for everybody and a new york strip steak as you enter?
