If you have ever been in conversation and used the phrase?....?

"my people", are you talking about friends and family or people with the same color of skin? My friend said she was against the fence on the border, said blah, blah my people. I said You don't even know those people, How racist. We are not has close now. What do you say?

Answer:
I am from the South and if I ever say "my people" that means my immediate family. I am white but obviously not related to every white person in the entire universe and have no interest in claiming allegiance to total strangers.
In the south (where I'm from and live) "my people" or "your people" means your kin...your family...
No I have never used that phrase
I refer to my family as "my family."

When my husband sees someone who looks wildly Irish (Red hair and crazy blue or green eyes) he says "Look, there's your peeps."

But if I refer to someone as "my people" I'm talking about fellow Americans who love the Red, White and Blue and are here legally and acknowledge the system of laws we all live under as valuable and applicable to them.
my people is Americans, race & religion not a factor.... obviously you don't know that when you start name calling such as racist it is because you have no good argument to dispute what the other is saying....
Jesse Jackson uses it and then lots of African Americans say he doesn't speak for them.
My people used to refer to one's family and friends. But nowadays, you will hear people using "You people", "Our people", "Your people" and "My People" as a way to lump groups of people of same racial qualities/ehtinic background together.
I have never used that phrase and personally I don't like it. It's racist to me because when I hear it , it is used as special rights or considerations for a specific group of people when the problem affects many others as well. Any politician that uses that uses that phrase is out in my book.
I would ask your friend who she "owns" when she referrs to her people? That's how I hear it.
She has a cultural connection with them. That sort of thing runs very deep in most places, with most cultures. The US seems to be the exception.
My people can mean anything the person wants it to mean or whatever local culture accepts.

It is time we stop trying to "read into" what people are saying and start listening carefully. The word "racist" is bantered around and is used as an excuse to quiet people and restrict their speech which is supposed to be "guaranteed free" under the Constitution.

Say what you want, mean what you say, don't apologize for your own opinions -- you have a right to them. Do demand that others apologize for their opinions either. Freedom of speech means you are free and they are free to say whatever they want -- with the exception of yelling "Fire" in a theatre.
I'm not a douche to use that type of language and basically categorize myself are being superior than others, because of my culture-that is just bullshiit to me. to be frank-I refer to myself as I...never do I get on the ego horse or pride one and parade around like an idiot claiming that I'm better. That is just suppressing others.
I used my people your people in a argument.
My social group people who don't cheat on their spouse.
Your social group ( proud to be a player ) getting pride from amount of sexual encounters and amount of simaltainous boy friends.
