If we can learn english, why cannot you learn spanish or any other language?

Answer:
Why would we need to learn spanish?
My country, and I already live here, you chose to come here, so I do not have to learn spanish if I do not want to.

By the way: my grandfather came here legally from Mexico, and guess what? He spoke ENGLISH, and so did my mother and her sibilings. He did not expect America to change for him when he came, he made sure he changed and became an American citizen. His name was Alvino Medrano, and he became a businessman in the town where we grew up. But then maybe speaking english is why he did not end up picking fruit or mowing other peoples lawns for a living.
In school you mean?

Well, im mexican, but to tell you the truth, learning all english in school would greatly help you, especially if you live in the united states.
How about this, we live here, and speak english, you stay there, and speak spanish, and see everyones happy.
I taught myself spanish after marrying an Argentine. you can do nything you make your mind up to do.
I assume you are inferring that America should accept immigrants because the immigrants really want to come in and have learned a little bit of english so they can communicate. We can learn Spanish. Anybody can. And if you're so good at english, read our lips "DEPORTED"
Things in America tend to be in English. If you come to America to live, you are expected to learn the accepted language. Now, say, if I wanted to move to Mexico, I would learn Spanish, then move, in order to facilitate my moving experience and lessen my difficulties.
Sé hablar español. Je sais parler français aussi. English is my prefer ed language of communication, however.
My first language is French but I of course speak English since I live in the USA. I also speak Spanish because I lived in Spain for about a year when I was a youngster. You speak the language of the Country in which you reside.
there is nothing wrong with learning any kind of language,as for myself spanish is fun and so is itailtian can't spell it write but america's a place of freedom and speech so what the hell if you don't want to learn it then don't later amigo's
nobody says you cant. Last i checked with every other country, they've all adopted an official language of their homeland. America is a land of the ENGLISH language, if it wasn't then the fore father's would have written our constitution in many different languages! Illegal scumbags dont see that; then again they have the liberal left on there side. the funny thing is they have fooled the illegal scumbags to think its concern about them as humans, but its really to sucker the illegal scumbags into getting them to vote for them! Brilliant plan, for the totally ignorant illegal scumbags!
I am an Spanish speaking immigrant in USA and I think I should speak English since it is the official language of this country. I am not comfortable imposing my language and culture in a country that is not mine. I do not feel that people in USA should learn Spanish just to talk to me. One thing is to share my language and culture, thus contributing to a richer meltpot but another one is to impose it. Said that, my grandmother used to say that "knowledge barely takes space", to learn to speak several languages is always a great way to expand culture.

I think that it is not about what we speak but about how we listen :)

Cheers,
Because when you're little, your brain soaks in all the information it can. And typically speech is the first thing you learn. The language taught, is the language that sticks!!!
i will never go to mexico so NO i will not learn spanish
Because we didn't move to Mexico, legally or otherwise. I will learn it, if I am ever forced to live there. And I already speak three languages other than English, so rethink your question.
Mostly because we don't have to, these days. In fact, we don't have to learn any other language at all: English turned out to be the true international language, and everyone wants to learn it.

I am somewhat appalled at this, if for no other reason than that English is a pretty wretched language to learn and I would have expected the rest of the world to have exercised better judgement. But under the circumstances it is fortunate for me, because I am not only a fairly skilled native speaker and writer of English, but I have absolutely no talent or aptitude to learn any other. I've actually tried a few times, but without luck: if I lived anywhere else, I'd still be back tending water buffalo while all my neighbors learned English and went off to the city to work in call centers or something.

This was not always the case, by the way. During the 1800's, when the American west was being settled, most of the immigrants spoke Spanish as well as English, as well as a few Indian tongues. You had to, to get along.
We can. Who said we couldn't? Why should we? It's not on my list of things to do though.
English is the business language around the world. I didn't make that the rule. It just is. I'm sure if another language would have been chosen as the business language I would be speaking it. Also, if I decide to live in another country I'll learn the language, but until then I'll speak English.
It is difficult to learn a language later in life. It is easier when you are young. So, unless you have a real need or desire for learning another language, it is hard to find the motivation. Unfortunately, the American school system does not teach foreign languages in the early years - we don't usually learn any until high school, when that ability is much harder. So, we lose enthusiasm. It's a shame because learning languages is a wonderful way to enrich our lives, increase our knowledge of the world, and relate to other cultures.

And now with all the text messaging and the slang of pop culture, kids don't know how to spell or use proper English anymore.

Personally I love the Spanish language and try to absorb the vocabulary whenever I can. I love helping a native Spanish speaker to learn English while he or she helps me with my Spanish. It is such a lovely language, not as difficult as French or German. And it sounds so different from country to country, just as English sounds different according to the region. In Spain, I was corrected if I did not lisp my "S" all the time. I love the Italian language too. Finnish is supposed to be one of the hardest languages to learn as an adult, but it can be done.
I learned a little Spanish.
America speaks English...Love it or leave it! We could learn any language we wanted to, but normal everyday speech is done in the same language so that everybody can understand everybody, everything can be written in one language, and we dont need interpreters everytime we leave the house.
It is a sign of respect. I am moving to Romania and although my Romanian will be broken I will show enough respect to those living there to attempt their language. I am also making my children learn it as well. If I were moving to Mexico I would do the same. I would not expect anyone to learn English to accommodate me English is not their national language Romanian is. Although America is a melting pot of cultures, and Religions it has long been established that English is the national Language. It reflects badly on those who do not even attempt to learn the National Language of the country you live in, It makes you appear stupid and lazy. Also anyone who has any desire to succede will learn the language of the country he is living in, why would you not want that for yourself and your children. Besides America is not the only country that feels this way, there are many others who will look down on even a visitor who will not take the time to attempt to learn the language, I feel up until here recently America has been more laid back about it than others.
Because English is the language of the USA. If I were to emigrate to Mexico, they sure as hell would expect me to learn Spanish & I would do so. By the way, the Mexican government are total hypocrites on immigration. They expect "rights" for all the illegals they send to the USA, but they are very harsh on illegals coming to Mexico. And there sure as hell aren't a raft of benefits for Central Americans or anyone else entering Mexico.
Unfortunately for you the majority of the people in this country speak English. If you want to live here, it's up to you to learn it or leave. Why should we learn another language to accommodate you? By the way, are you here legally?
cause the last time i checked the national language here is english!! But, here in so-cal you would never know it!
place a value on any language is myopic and stupid..... it's just a means of communication.

english only folk believe their language is superior..... they suffer from myopia and are eurocentric and reductionistic!!!!!
Because it requires brain!
