The three places you mentioned are actually getting expensive by the day. I think it all depends on what exactly you are doing there, and where you would live and how you would live. for 8-10 months and if you are not getting any income while you are there, you should at least have $10,000 just because you are in a foreign country. And remember, since you are an American, the prices of many things would be higher for you automatically!! Unless you either learn to find ways to get cheap stuff or get a friend who knows the ways to do that.

for Beijing or Shanghai it will be cheaper as the living standard are lower. About USD$700/month for Beijing or Shanghai maybe around USD$1300/month for HK. those are just for rent, food, transports. nothing else!! The rent in HK are very expensive
