Will Americans do the work of illegal immigrants if ?
And if this true living wage were paid what would be the true impact on business and the economy?
Answer:
In the first place most of the jobs have been done by Americans, they have been replaced by illegals, who undercut the wages, not because we are fat and lazy . If in 1986 we have 3.0 million illegals, a very low % were doing the work American did not want to do. So the if we stop illegals from coming, two things will happen. Wages for most jobs will raise, and the jobs such as seasonal in agriculture, will be automated, hell we can even have the government give tax credit to speed the process. I think the Cotton gin shows that it can be done. All this illegals issue is about business's greed for cheap labor, and the Class of 1986, who were given amnesty and want the same for their family and friends.
We can at a later date have a new immigration policy that will accommodate our needs, but this has been about the needs of the illegals not the needs of the US citizen
Your last question beggs the issue, ( I don't know what that mean, but I have always want to say that) the problem with illgals is they made big bucks for business, but incure very large cost for government, health care, education, anchor babies, ssi, foods stamps and such. So the citzens are not really benifiting from cheap labor, the backend cost are killing us. So if wages rise, we will pay higher prices, but we will pay lower taxes. How how this is going to effect the greed of business's, we will have to let it play it's self out.
But I sure would like to try
You the consumer would be passed the price thats why we outsource to india.
My city governent wouldn't have such a defecit. THats for damn sure.
There aren't too many Americans who will pick lettuce in the fields from sunrise to sunset, regardless of the wage they were paid!

if you were cool you woud know what i said
if it meant getting the damn illegals out of this country, i'd do the work they do now!
I think if they left our country then we would be forced to do the work that they did, it would make a lot more opportunities for people who have no education or experience in finding a job.
americans are going to have to start doing the work of illegals simply to pay for our gas guzzling suv's and the high (ridiculously high) price of gas.
the new job for immigrants should be to dig oil and gas wells.
How much would someone have to pay YOU to go pick grapes in 110 degree heat? 50 miles from home?
Then imagine paying THAT to HUNDREDS of people.
So how much those grapes are going to cost now, folks?
And to the Ostrichs who don't like my answer, I guess the truth hurts, doesn't it?
We already do this work!
Illegal immigrants only make up about 4% of the US workforce and are basically concentrated in a few areas (hospitality, yard maintenance).
No they won't. They think picking vegetables should pay $20 an hour. It is any excuse to be lazy.
Absolutely to first sentence! Positively to second sentence!
The big lie "work Americans won't do" is getting old. Before the flood of illegals Americans did the work. My family picked fruit and worked in canneries. Why do you think there is a shortage of summer jobs for students? Because walmart, mcdonalds etc..hires illegals. The true living wage will as you call it will cause fruits n veggies prices to go up. I think Americans can deal with it.
You would have to raise the wages & throw in benefits.
So, no.
Well, who did the work before all the illegal immigrants started pouring into our country. I'm taking a good educated guess here, I'd say that Americans did the work before they decided to start flooding our country. So, hey go figure we use to could do it!!! So, then I'm betting on the American people and that they still could do it!
Americans will never work that hard for that little pay. Not to mention no vacation pay, health plan, 401K.
If illegal immigrants didn't do the work we would see massive price increases throught all sectors of our economy.
Would you pay $10.00 for a head of lettuce??
yes. look at the swift meat packing plants. they have been busted for hiring illegal aliens. the next day American Citizens were lined up to do the jobs.
The living wage is like the unicorn, a myth. What will happen if the US were to deport all of the Mexicans (i.e. illegal immigrants) is that jobs done by them now will either be gotten rid of (i.e. people will start taking care of their own gardening and will learn how to clean up after themselves) or wages will have to rise so companies can fill those positions. Any increase in wages will then have to be passed on to the consumer, which will spur higher prices in certain sectors of the economy.
No, Americans will not. I don't know of a single American, me, my friends, my family, or someone I have ever heard of that will do the work most Illegal Immigrants do.
And, the impact to the economy will be more outsourcing (ever call your credit card company lately) and businesses will be forced to leave and start their companies in countries that have cheap labor.
I am one of those people who were happy with the way things are right now.
This probably isn't the answer you are looking for but I think if we didn't have the illegal immigrants in this country it would save us money. Also taking the illegals out would give the out of work Americans a place to work, in turn they could possibly stop drawing unemployment, food stamps, WIC, etc. and that would stop using our tax money. Another subject would be it sucks that we Americans don't even make enough money to pay for the rising gas prices!!!
Americans were doing the work before illegal immigrants starting coming here. Companies became greety, turned the back on the American workers, and hired the illegal immigrants for cheaper labor. This was done to increase profits.
As a kid growing up, I worked in the fields over the summers to get my school clothes, etc. The money was good and seasonal. Now, the wages are so low, that it is not worth it.
However, what most don't realize is that once illegal immigrants are citizens, they too will demand higher wages. Beforehand, they had to accept what was given b/c they were illegal and didn't want to expose themselves.
The economy will balance itself. Now, there is a widen gap between the rich and poor. By paying higher and competitive wages, the rich must give up some profits to continue doing business.
But, we all know they will not take a loss in profits and will simply send the work off shore to another lower waged country.
what would the impact be?
lets see, fewer noncitizens getting free medical care
fewer medical clinics closing down because of all the illegals leeching off our system
fewer noncitizens getting welfare
no more ESL in public schools that waste time, money and energy
no more *No hispanic that cant habla ingles left behind* programs in school
I think the effects would be great!
The outcome would be inflation..Look at Europe.Or any first world country..They are not as dependent on immigrants as is our country.Sure they receive immigrants, but on a MUCH lower scale..The cost of living in Europe, and most European countries is VERY expensive..Their workers get paid a lot more than we do here and have benefits and generous vacation time. But then again, gas, food, housing is much more expensive..It balances it out in the end.The problem with us is we depend on cheap labor, and if we were to remove illegals, it would put our economy in a tailspin..We need to this gradually..By deporting some, legalizing others, and securing our borders. We need to get off the teat of slave labor and give our citizens liveable wages, for both skilled and unskilled workers. But thats not going to happen overnight, but gradually.
Here's what I think:
I think that we need these immigrants to come over and work because the majority of poor people in this country want things to be given to them. There is no way that anyone is going to pay more money to somebody with half of the work ethic. I am in the inner city and I see it every day. The people that would "need" these jobs are too lazy to do them. Not only are they too lazy but they are too uneducated to have the people skills that they need to do any job. They won't be happy with the work, will tell their boss off and not think anything of it. I know this, I teach the next generation of them coming up. They are taught by their parents that they don't have to listen to other people, and that getting an education is not as important as having an image and spending money.
Enough ranting, the second part of your question is interesting as well. I think that if the true living wage was paid, it would hurt the economy because prices would skyrocket. The companies that are using the cheap labor would have to jack their prices up and so on and so forth. Gotta go but I hope that answered your questions.
no...those jobs were around before the splurge of illegal immigrants into this country so what would make them want those jobs?! a better pay? working in the fields is working in the fields regardless if the pay is raised by a few cents...i very much doubt there are people (u.s. citizens) that are willing to do such a job like that...from what i hear it is VERY TIRING AND NOT A SURE JOB!
Well, here in Wisconsin they do. The farmers hire the teens, college kids and such to do some pretty hard work. I did it for a few summers, and I can tell you, those were a few of the toughest summers ever.
The farmers here use their kids, and hire hands. All of them are here legally, and pay taxes on the money they use. They also keep it in this economy, and don't send it out to another country.
What a ridiculous question. Of course the Americans would. It is the people that hire the illegals that are too cheap to follow the labor laws! If they followed the labor laws, they would have to pay minimum wages, not allow a person to work over so many hours, and would have to allow breaks and vacations. They would also have to pay some benefits. This all doesn't appeal to the people hiring illegals. Don't tell me it would greatly impact the economy. For crying out loud - I am paying $3.40 at the pump for a gallon of gas! Will it really bother me if the price of a bunch of bananas goes from $0.33 to $0.50? Probably not. The cost of everything is going to go up anyways due to the cost of gas.
That is a poor argument for allowing criminals to remain in this country and keeping them free. We shouldn't reward illegal behavior.
Just a thought: Wanna teach the people here illegally a lesson? Let's offer that amnesty to those in Mexico that can prove they have been living in Mexico for the last 20 years, are in need of a better life, and apply - free of charge - to come in. We offer up a good number of these amnesty packages, and then thumb our noses at those that are here illegally!!! ppfffftttttttttttt. . .
They have before. Not having illegals here may just be what we need. Aren't you sick of THE HIGH COST OF LIVING?? it's time to get back to basics.
Why are people making this such an issue. There are plenty of HS kids and College kids that would love to work to pay their student loans. And young kids that would LOVE to have a paper route again . Let's not for get the retired folks that can't cut it with their SS Check. And are CURRENTLY WORKING ALREADY! to try and make ends meet!
The work has always gotten done. Life was great long before the illegals were ever thought of. When any group believes the world can't get by without them, they're really good bluffers. They believe their own lies.
I agree with Angela, some need deported (those that have done something criminally wrong, i.e. stealing, drugs etc), others should become legal (those with families here, been here for a long time etc) and the borders need to be secured. Why are we crying about the illegals who are already here when the border still isn't secure. Would you make a fuss about a thief entering your home in the night when you left the door open?? Why do we then when they come in with our door still open??? I know many illegals and some are great people, but I would like to see something done to help them, and I know some shouldn't be allowed to stay, but some should be allowed to stay. To answer your question, I surely hope that it doesn't come to all illegals being gone and Americans being hired to do the work. Most lanscapping buisness are going to be out of buisness, they cannot find someone to work the same way for the same $$ and would fall. Restaurant prices would skyrocket, even McDonalds. Construction would be shoddy, hate to say it, but when I worked construction we had two americans on the crew among mexicans, el salvadorians, brazilians, and a japones guy. The americans did the worst job and quit within a few weeks. If people were paid a "true living" wage as you call it, everything would be thrown in to a tailspin, as a consumer, the price I have to pay for just about everything would be affected. It may be made somewhere else, but the manpower would decrease and cost of the company from here on out would be more. Keep some, deport some, secure the border!
