What can explain a K1 visa delay?

A general consensus seems to be that it is taking roughly six months for the K1 application approval. My application was received Sept. 22, 2006, almost nine months ago and its status is still pending. According to the USCIS site, California is now processing applications up to Nov. 14, 2006, though according to Kevin on this forum they are only up to Sept, 2006. What could cause the delay?

Answer:
Background check? I understand some countries aren't automated, and some 'countries of interest' take longer.

On the other hand, they could have simply lost it under a stack, they are human. Did you follow up?
Someone lost your paperwork? Your paperwork got routed to the wrong office by accident? Things happen. It took us 3 years to get my husband's permanent residency established. First we had 9/11 (2 months after we submitted the paperwork). We re-sent the paperwork, the INS got re-structured. We re-sent the paperwork again, the Dept. of Homeland Security got re-structured. We finally managed to get it through the 4th time we applied. Laws change all the time, paperwork gets misrouted all the time. Call your attorney and find out what the delay is. If you did not use an attorney, THAT could be the reason for the delay. If something was not filled out properly, your paperwork could be delayed indefinitely - don't rely on the office where you filed to call you and tell you. You need to chase down the reason why it has been delayed.
