SSN waiting estimate?

I am a US born citizen at birth who has from baby-age resided in a foreign country for over 20 years plus. Now I am coming back to my home country as an adult for the 1st time after so long to look for employment opportunities. Went to apply for an SSN number and was told to wait 3 months for it !! And there was no guarantee that I could be issued an SSN even though I have a legal US passport and birth certificate. The officials say they need more time to check my submitted documents over such a period. And I am not really convinced that it takes such a long time for them to check it out. Does anyone have such an experience like mine here? What are the chances of nonresident US citizens out of the States for a long time to get their Social Sec. Number here? I am getting really crazy having to wait for so long...its really a burden without having the number as soon as possible. Anyone has answers or similar experiences to share here? Thanks!

Answer:
How come you werent assigned a SSN from the hospital where you were born? How did you get a passport without one?
there should be no reason you have to wait this long, did you get a ssn issued to you at birth??? if you were born here you should not have to wait longer then 2 weeks for a card.
i dont have a similar story but that doesnt sound right anyhow. it should take at least 1month but in the meanwhile, they should have issued you a printed out ss# on a sheet of paper:while u wait. if you were born in the united states of america, and have a u.s birth certificate u have to have a s.s #
if not then yes you must wait but for at least 2weeks, not that long of a period. it is ridiculous... i would go back and keep trying to find out what the deal is>make it seem important to them
it doesn't take that long, but there are millions of people just like you waiting in line. THAT takes a long time.
