You can travel within the US and territories. If you need to travel outside the US, you need to apply for Advanced Parole-use form I-131.

My best friend went to Brazil with her green card pending and you know what happen? Instead of waiting a few months for the green card to come she is still waiting (it has been over 2 years)
and when she went to the immigration dept. to ask why it was taking so long she got a nasty answer. They said that she left the country when she was not supposed to do so.
I did not leave the country when my was pending and I got it fast... and not only that the rest of the process went sooo much easier....

and then you can travel outside the US for a maximum of six months any thing longer and you will lose status just went to

Depends on whether you choose to get the Green Card by leaving the USA to be processed in a home country, or trying to do it without leaving the USA. If you choose to get an adjustment of status without leaving, you are essentially grounded. If you leave and return, you'll receive your visa as a stamp in your passport until the plastic card arrives. Of course, there is a reason most do not leave: cannot guarantee to get back in a timely manner. I processed my Green Card by taking the chance and leaving and it worked out okay, but my home country had a short queue for US immigrant visas and no security issues clouding the application.
