If I was interested in moving permantly to London and I am from the states; what do I need to do?

Answer:
your going to need to contact UK immigrations, or the US embassy.

You are definately going to need a good job! because London is a very expensive city compare to the USA. However, it has a culture and vibe all of its own.
Dont listen to the people above, i have lived in London (swiss cottage) all my life and it is a wonderfully diverse place with pleanty of jobs - if you have good qualifications.

good luck
get used to being mugged, paying twice as much money for eveything and being bored stupid
Think carefully - London is a DUMP now - stay where you are
Stop off in Paris for about 80 years first.
get a good umbrella it rains all year round, better be rich or you live in poverty since everything is sooo expensive, request to stay from their "home office", better have a good reason.
Only fun in living there is that you can travel to France and rest of Eurpoe on weekends, thats about it.
stay where you are! lol
You should always stay at least 6 months in a new place before you decide to live there permenatly. That is my best advice. I have traveled to Europe many times and own an apt. there.I am still not 100% sure I want to live here forever. You will always be a foreigner even if it is England you want to move to.It isn't always easy to stand out.Go for a long visit first...
Contact the British embassy closest to you..They may be in a major city. They have all the information you need...Best of luck...

Get your head tested.! Sorry but London is not a good idea.
americans do not require the visa to stay in UK for the period of 3 months. once you are here explore london and the country if you still think it is your destiny. then that is it. you can apply from here in defferent catagories. under employment, hsmp or even you can marry to some one. after all getting any of these status you will be asked to stay in the country for a period of 5 years and after you can apply for ILR with certain conditions. once you got the ILR then you can apply for citizenship. It is only in the case of marriage they give ILR to immegrants after the completion of first two years. you can also apply business visa but then you have to have really good capital.

if you are thinking about moving here think about cery carefully i have lived here all my life and if could afford it i would move it is not a nice place to live anymore its expensive the crime rate is incressing and there is few job opportunities the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer and then there is the congestion charges
you will need lots of money and a good sence of humor
Buy a horse and cart, either that or a submarine you, or your offspring, are going to drown.
