How's this for a way to address immigration issues?

1) Enforce existing laws - regarding illegal border crossings, overstaying of visas, and most importantly the hiring of illegals. GET CONTROL OF THE BORDER, FIRST.

2) When the situation is more under control - the flow of illegals is greatly reduced, and many already here have left (because work has dried up), THEN take stock of who is here and consider some kind of program so they are not left out in the cold. (The period of the "crack down" should be at least five years, and maybe longer. And that has to be five years of fully-funded and rigorous enforcement, funded by the heavy fines paid by employers who break the law.) Ideas to be considered include some kind of education program - in English, and American civics - a THOROUGH background check, and a lengthy probationary period before legal residency status.

3) Who will do the jobs they don't want to do? We'll find out in the interim.

(to be continued)

Answer:
You know what your problem is ... you make too much sense, they'll never go for it.

I would only differ with you in that I say the "crack down" has to last indefinitely. Those who hire illegals should be fined heavily as well as those who promote illegal immigration through smuggling or harboring illegals. People who say that we shouldn't fine employers for hiring illegals are usually either guilty of immigration related offenses or illegal themselves. The law is the law and it should be rigorously enforced, this includes giving Border Patrol Agents more authority to do their job.

I am an immigrant who filled out the forms, paid the fees and waited in line. Giving "amnesty" to those who would disrespect the law, living a life of lies and deceit only encourages more illegal immigration.

Immediate deportation and tougher enforcement of existing laws is the answer.
Congress would never go for anything like that... it makes too much sense.

Edit: I fully agree with what you are saying, however anything that would seem to be the right thing would not win votes for congress. They are more concerned about re-elections, than the citizens that they represent, and that pay their salaries. Now, put something like this on a referendum and let the people vote - I think it would go through very easily. I didn't mean to sound flippant, I was just trying to be honest.
Do you really think its wise to fine the employers for hiring illegals? Most of them are just small business' who will be put out of business by these fines and losing their workers.

I can agree with enforcing existing laws to a point. But seriously what can you do with 12 million + illegals? Out of the 12 million + how many can you say with 100% certainty are "true" criminals?

Let the ones stay. They are NOT being granted amnesty, they are NOT be handed citizenship, they are just being given a chance to work.
ENFORCE OUR EXISTING LAWS FIRST! After our laws are being enforced, then we can talk about other issues. I honestly don't think we need any new laws regarding illegal immigration. We have many good ones on the books. The main problem is that they aren't enforced!

First thing to do is crack down on ALL EMPLOYERS of the illegals. Sure there are jobs that Americans won't do, for $5/hour. However $5/hour is illegal! The employers are a major problem and the government is looking the other way. Take away the jobs and you take away the illegals!

Did you hear about the about the janitorial employees that were reported during a raid? They hired a coyote to smuggle them back and now they are suing the employer for back wages.
you want a real solution to the immigration problem? Build a catapult and fire them in the direction of what ever country they came from. People know if they come here and get busted, all we do is pay for their plane ticket home and say please stay away. If people had the fear of being fired out of a catapult, they would be less likely to come here in the first place. They might not even die, they may just get seriously injured, either way they will either be in Mexico, Canada, or the ocean, Not our problem. These criminals are not protected under our constitution, and therefore are not entitled to any of our rights and freedoms. If all we do is give these people a plane ride home and a stern talking to, they will continue challenging our athourity.
It is a great start, but I don't feel the illegals that are here should be allowed to stay. How is that fair to taxpayers and legal people who are willing and able to do those jobs, too. So many people still don't get the fact that if you are here illegally you are a criminal. You don't have to break 50 laws to be a criminal and illegal entry into our country is a criminal offense! Premeditated and performed with the knowledge that they are breaking our laws and done intentionally. It's like a man who steals who is not sorry that he stold but only that he got caught.
Sounds like a great plan to me.
