Checking on a foreigner's eligibility to work in the US?
Answer:
Here is a website that may help you: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/m...
From what I read, you just check the green card and EAD (employment authorization document) to make sure they aren't expired. Then if you actually hire him, there is another form you can fill out to find out if he is eligible to work here.
As a permenant Resident, he still must have an employment authorization card (EAD), an alien registration card ("green card"), or the temporary I-551 stamp in his passport in order to get a social security number. I would check to make sure he has one of these.

By law if he is completing the W4 and I-9 forms, you are required to check ID's and make copies, so then you can check with the Social Security Office to make sure it is eligible and the USCIS. Thats why they (US govt) made those forms, but employres are too busy to verify them all.
If he is illegal you will know, but then again if LEGAL you will not offend anyone through discrmination of color, creed, religion and nationality and you are within your rights too and company cannot be sued.
I am an alien that emigrated here legally. I just got my employment authorization card (EAC) which is valid for 12 months and I am eligible to work in this country. During the 12 month period of the validity of my (EAC) I will receive the stamp on my passport ( I-551) and then the conditional residency card, as far as I know, after receiving the residency card I would not need the EAC anymore. My residency card would be enough to apply for a job.
Now if I know that my residency card will take longer to process, I can ask for a new EAC and present it to my boss showing him that I am allow to work here legally.
I am glad that you worry to verify the eligibility of a worker.
