I was born in the UK, can i use an out of date passport as proof i am eligable to work in the UK?

I have been on maternity leave and have just been accepted for a possition in a supermarket but they have a new policy which is to ask all new employees for proof of ID to work in the UK. I have a passport but it has became out of date last FEB, i am not looking to renew it at the mo because with a young son i wont be travelling for a while and the whole reason i am going back to work is because i really need the money so i dont have the cash to renew it anyway. I have also given my employer my drivers licence, marriage cert and a proof of address. If all of this is refused what else can i use?

Answer:
Your out of date passport coupled with a birth certificate is considered proof.
Everything that you can supply should be enough babe, it is usually just a passport or a drivers license they ask for anyway seen as how the photo is on the card now....... If however they did want more ID you could give them your passport they probably wouldn't even know it had expired its just the likes of customs that'll look for those things!! Its not like you were a different person last year to who you are this year!! Don't worry babe and good luck in your new job!!!xx
you can use an out of date one, as it does have your date of birth and name, but whoever you show it to, really prefer up to date ones.
You should be able to - it depends on the employer. I registered with an agency using an old one; they can't expect you to necessarily have a passport, you might never have left the country or ever intend to, it's not a compulsory document.

Take along your birth certificate too if you're not sure though, and preferably an item of photographic ID if you have one.
You are probably worrying unnecessarily. Many people who have never travelled out of the UK and therefore do not have a passport work in the UK. As you have been on maternity leave, you must have worked before and must have an NI number and tax code. Take these to your prospective employer and together with the other documents you have already given them they should be satisfied.
why don't you ask the manager what he or she wants?
i think they really need your national insurance number.
Just use your out of date passport, it should be oki kala.
Unfortunately, you can't use an out-of-date passport. I had the same problem last year. The only way around this is to renew. A bummer, I know.

If your driving licence is one of the new photo-ID ones, that should be enough - just take both parts in. That would be enough to rent a property (again - I did this last year) so it should be enough for the employer. If you've got a national insurance number, or any correspondence from the benefits agency that will be proof as well.

Good luck with returning to work!
