I am a Canadian living in the US for about 7 years and really like living here?
Answer:
I hope your time in America is filled with prosperity. America is the greatest nation on earth and its people like you that help to make it great. As for your family and friends comments, I would just shrug it off. Most people don't have any clue what America is like- although every these days seems to be an "expert" on America. I imagine much of the condescending remarks from your friends stems from jealousy.
You live in the greatest country on earth and are part of this great land. Who wouldn't be jealous?
Like Robin Williams said, Canada is just a loft over a really great party.
I know there has always been a "versus" thing going on between the US and Canada, but I must say as of late, it seems the rift is deepening. I am not sure who started it, actually I think it is mutual, but we are both to blame.
I, as a Canadian, can say I am not crazy about American Politics and Policy as of late, but you know what??? Not too crazy about Canadian Politics and Policy lately either.
But by no means does that mean that I don't like the American public or american individuals or wouldn't like living in America.
It is not just your friends and family. I often have to hear my fellow Canadian friends and family bashing Americans with such feverence. Although it is normally people who don't know anything about politics or economics and couldn't name anyone in the whitehouse except Bush and Cheney.
LOL...come to think of it, I don't think most even know who their MP is .
I think most Canadians should spend more time following our own politics and economics and work on fixing our stuff before they should critcize another country.
I also think that Americans should actually learn a bit about Canada before assuming we are "America Junior" as so eloquently put by Homer Simpson.
I live in Los Angeles. When I went to school in Palo Alto (northern California) I found that the northern Californians really had a chip on thier shoulder about southern California. I was very surprised, because Southern Californians have no problem with Northern Californians at all. I was told it was due to the fact that since we get our water from a different place (the Colorado river) Northern Californians would have droughts and not be able to flush the toilet, etc, and would show pictures of Southern California sprinkler systems watering their lawns.
I also found that the main port had moved to southern California, and northern California had lost jobs. Then I had someone froth at me because LA now had a year round Opera and San Francisco (at least at that time) no longer did.
I mean, it was DEEP resentment, of which I had been entirely ignorant, living in Southern California.
I don't know why the people you are speaking to don't like us, but there is probably an underlying reason that we as individuals had little impact on.
You'll just have to make up your own mind.
If you've been in both places and they haven't, perhaps you have more insight into this than they do.
Nice to have you in the US. You friends and family are quite normal. They are just trying to look out for you. You are your own person and you make your own decisions. I used to have a cousin who moved to Canada. She's dead now but you may have heard of her, Princess Grace?
Stay true to your family but try to get them to see things your way.
