If I am british and live in the UK, how would i apply for a green card/USA visa in the lottery they do??

Answer:
Sorry, but you can't. The diversity visa lottery is open to citizens of countries that have sent fewer than than 50,000 immigrants to the U.S. over the period of the past five years. The UK (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories is one of 17 or so countries whose citizens cannot apply because of the large numbers of their immigrants to the US.

Here is more information on the rules, and how it works.
