That's a bunch of crap. Me personally I went to France a few years ago knowing very little French. And yes, even though me and my American friends spoke English back at the dorm, when I watched tv I watched French tv; when I read a newspaper I read French newspapers; when I listened to the radio, I listened to French music. And after a month and a half I was speaking fluently to the point that I was having dreams in French. So don't get up here and preach about it being difficult to learn another language when you're in another country living there. BTW, what about all the latinos that did learn to speak English in a few months???
.... and for 'colera667', english is actually one of the easiest languages to learn. For example, there's no formal conjugation. Whereas in spanish you conjugate the verb escuchar like this:
yo escucho
tu escuchas
el/ella/ud. "escucha
nosotros escuchamos
ellos/as/uds. escuchan
in english it's simply this:
I hear
you hear
he/she hears
we hear
they hear
........ that's much easier than the stem-changing verbs in spanish.
another point to ponder is that most ESL (English as a Second Language) classes are filled to capacity with waiting lists.

Exactly, there is a difference between speaking English and speaking white. Most of them have a general idea on how to speak it, but like you pointed out their accent is super thick. I think we should start saying how funny they sound when attempting to speak Spanish, it isn't an easy thing.

I don't think most people are mad because they can't speak english....they are mad because immigrants choose to come over hear....and most people, myself included, don't feel like we should have to work around them.....spending extra money to have text books in spanish, making buisness spend extra money to have menus and signs printed in two languages......I actually know people who were not given a job as a cashier because she could not speak spanish.....do i care wether a immigrat can speak english....no....but I don't think that things should have to be done twice to accomodate a group of people who choose to live here.

I could see that as being a very common misconception - although, I've never blamed an immigrant for speaking poor english. They obviously had it harder than I did, so I can't really complain there, now can I?
english is the hardest language in the world to learn. a lot of americans especialy do not understand this.
Over 60% of the illegal aliens have been arrested 6 times or more. Isn't staying out of trouble as important as learning English? Also what is going on in 'their' country that is so darn bad or not as good as USA?

It is hard to learn a new language but that did not stop my step sons from learning it in less than a year when they came to the states. Don't talk crap like this and expect intelligent people to believe it you only wreck you creditability.
English is a really hard language to learn and I applaude anyone who makes the effort. However, I have come across some that refuse to learn or act like they don't know. English is my second language and the one I use often. When I go to Mexico, I'm expected to speak spanish, and get mad fun of if I don't say the words right. Some people have refused to help me in a store if I didn't know the spanish word for what I was looking for. Point being, it goes both ways.
When I was on a ski holiday in the French Alps....I noticed that most of the American tourists refused to speak French too.
Probably the same reason. I wasn't apalled. After all they were Americans. What else would you expect?
I worked with some Colombians who hired on at my job and everyone ended up learning more Spanish than they learned English so we could communicate and keep them productive, I think Americans should learn Spanish, I am always impressed that the people of India speak English well enough to answer phones for companies such as Dell
we are giving spanish speaking classes in school. most jobs require you to be bilingual, so that you can speak to the spanish speaking people. why should we have to learn spanish when we live in america and the language is english? if you are going to come over here illegally in the first place don't expect us to accomodate to your language. that is just plain stupid. i have grown up speaking nothing but english.....so your point is completly invaild. it would be hard for me to learn an entire new language as well....but you also don't see me crossing into someones country ILLEGALLY and telling them they need to learn to understand ME. thats just crap.
It's hardly only illegal immigrants. There are plenty of legal immigrants who fail to speak English as well. In fact, you have to travel very little (MyTend for example) to find legal citizens who fail to be able to properly communicate in English.
All said, there are some illegal immigrants who refuse/fail to speak/learn English. The failure of the citizens of the United States to legislate any one language as our national language will be the further decline of America.
Why should businesses and government be legally forced to provide options in foreign languages just because some loser fails to learn English? We're talking about small businesses here which employ 2/3's of the American labor force.

I'm trying to learn to speak Spanish and am grateful many kind people don't laugh at me or make fun of me...a little more kindness when they're trying might be in order!
I think a lot of people assume Hispanics can't speak English because they often continue to speak Spanish with each other and with family-this has been true in that culture for many years. I laughed because my visitors to Colorado saw a family speaking Spanish to each other (and commented about immigration problems). Soon after, the woman turned to us and spoke in perfect English! Need to be careful with assumptions..
Because they don't have to. This country was built on the principle of assimilation. You came to America to be American. Now, however , it's Americas job to learn their language. Not anymore. Ask yourself why when you walk into a Dept. Of Motor Vehicles office you can take the test in over twenty languages? When all the signs are in English?
Their should be no Hyphens in the USA. I've looked on every globe and I have never seen Irish-America , Hispanic-America or African America or any whatever-America. If we don't start calling ourselves American and American only , we'll be living in the tower of Babel all over again.
I have lived here all my life and have had to learn Spanish for my line of work. I have tried to teach English, but I think the country does a disservice to Spanish -only speaking people by having many things posted in Spanish, for convenience. eg..many billboards / restaurant signs I have seen are only posted in Spanish, which upsets those who don't understand.I have seen some try, and some refuse...because "that is what's spoken in my house." It is not hard if you are dedicated to assimilate.
They DO have FREE classes where they can learn English...and this is true for the entire US. They don't want to learn English because then they can't say that they don't know what you are saying then. The second reason why they don't want to learn is because they still owe allegiance to Mexico where they send millions of $$$'s year after year, even to the point that it is the third largest revenue in Mexico every year!!!
They don't WANT to become American citizens because then that would mean that they would have to pay taxes (which they don't want to do) and actually have to compete for American jobs. Follow the money and it will tell you information that people in power don't want you to know. Come to think of it, this is true for everything that is today's issues!
Part of the HUGE outrage over Illegal Immigration is that these folks come here and our system caters to them more than it cater to the rest of us. That's not all their fault but I have to keep wondering why AMerican schools degrade their education, in oreder to teach illegal immigrant children in Spanish. American kids can't get a decent education because of this anymore.
Now that American has come up on it's toes over the March debacle hoisted by mostly Mexicanos waiving Mexican flags, I believe I see folks making more of an effort generally.
I do believe that stupidity by the poorer illegals allows them to be led into even more stupidity and compromising postions by the folks of acts like La Raza, MECHA and so on. They don't know any better. Maybe stupidity isn't the right word; ignorance might be better, whichever.

MOST speak English? What planet are you from. I have the illegal alien criminals living all around me and hardly any speak English. I shouldn't have to teach them. They should have the drive to learn it themselves!
Then there's the people that can speak English but they only speak it when it suits them. I was at Disneyland and a fat lady sat on my feet (waiting for a parade). When I asked her to move off my feet, she pretended to only speak Spanish. I later heard her speak English. This is a COMMON occurrence!!!
