How does the child become British?
They say nationality goes through the mother unless the parents are married.
Mother is EU citizen (no, not eastern european!) so she has the passport of the mother's homeland ... and her English dad's surname.
Will she become British if the parents get married? Or what else would have to happen for her to acquire British citizenship?
Answer:
Yes she is British. If her mother is from a dual citizen country the child could also obtain status as a dual citizen if she resides in that country.
Check out British citizenship laws. They explain in detail her status.
Later today I did more research and this is what I came up with.
According to British nationality law, quote: Where the father is not married to the mother the Home Office will usually register the child as British provided an application is made and the child would have been British otherwise. This would apply if the child is under the age of 18 at the time of application. The father would not have to be married to the mother.
As an added thought. If the child's paternity is questioned, further proof would need to be given.
She is British through her father.
and her birth certificate

sounds like she is already british. if she has a britsh birth certificate then thats it, u can get british passport with that too.
I thought she would be British if she were born there.
She would be British. If she was asked her Ethnic Origin, it would be Anglo-European (half-English, half European). At the moment, even though the parents aren't married, it's still in the blood, so I'd say marriage doesn't matter.
The law was changed now you have to go through
the immigration process..........................
She's not Britsh. Being born in the UK does not guarantee UK citizenship. She can wait until she's 18 and apply for citizenship then.
I'm German, my husband British. we live in England. our daughter was born here and got a British passport. the only way to do it really. how would you get a passport anywhere else if you can't leave the country without one? :)
Taken from a website:
Children born the UK/qualifying territory
Children who are born in the UK on or after 21 May 2002, or in a qualifying territory, will always be British citizens otherwise than by descent if, when the child is born, one of the parents is:
a British citizen (it does not matter whether the parent is a British citizen by descent or otherwise than by descent); or
settled in the United Kingdom; or
settled in a qualifying territory. Settled means you are usually resident there without being restricted, under the immigration laws, as to how long you can stay there.
Children who are born in a British overseas territory will always be British overseas territories citizens, as long as a parent is a British overseas territories citizen or settled there when the child is born.
If the birth occurred before 21 May 2002, the same applies.
The child will not be a British citizen if:
they are British overseas territories citizens only by a connection with the Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia (in Cyprus); or
they were already British citizens by descent before 21 May 2002.
Children who are born outside the United Kingdom and qualifying territories to British citizens otherwise than by descent

It is the parents who show what Nationality a child is not where they were born. I was born in a taxi and it does not make me a taxi
