Why can't Spanish be the official language of America?

Answer:
You're kidding right? America has been speaking English since it's been a country.
Because not enough people speak it, and not enough want to. People don't have a right to come illegally and through illegal numbers change our country's culture against our will. How would they like to 'go back home' and find it had been taken over by someone speaking a different language they didn't speak and not understand daily conversations in their own 'home' country?

We are all more comfortable with our own culture, and while the American culture includes assimilation - both ways - of many cultures, that is not the same as being subsumed into a single foreign culture. It is also dependent on a slow change, which mass legal immigration does not lend itself to.

Why should we be ok with having 'Main Street USA' wiped off of the face of the planet? How would you feel if it were your culture being lost?
Because English is!! DUH! Spanish is pretty much our 2nd language, so why worry about it.
I wouldn't mind that..but would it be right to say that English should be Mexico's official language?
I am bilingual and Mexican so Ireally don't mind
I think we should adopt German. Ja, ist eine gutten language.
Spanish is another European language just like English.

Why not Japanese? ;)
DUH....
Yea that would be pretty cool. Well, The USA doesn't have an official language ;).
Are you serious? English will always be our national language. And people who move to the United States who don't speak English, need to learn it.
because the first language was English well no not really it was native American oh hell whatever
It's too hard to learn and you can't understand a word of it. Sounds really like a star trek movie. Alien
cuz it would be too funny seeing white people trying to speek spanish.
No offence
it could be but that wouldent make sence, spanish speaking people are a minority in america, but in the future who knows?
What are you stupid or something.......This is the U.S.A we speak English.......

If you want America to have spanish as there official language

WELL GO TO SOUTH AMERICA
1) Because it has been English since this country was settled

2) Because we are the native born citizens

3) Because WE say so.

**If it should change to any language other than English maybe everyone should learn CHEROKEE. It was here before English.
Because when the immigrants came to America, they did came from different countries where they speak different languages, but if you are talking about USA which is not America,is part of America, most of the immigrants came from England where the people speak English
america is a continent. and a huge majority of people of the CONTINENT of America speak spanish so yeah it could be plausible. but if you mean the united states then no, theres not enough people that speak it. however, we will soon get back the stolen land through sheer numbers. don't give me any of this "we bought the land" crap, you payed about 12,000 pesos which isn't a lot. and our culture HAS been changed. Ever heard of Columbus? the murders who came from spain and completely changed our culture. the people of mexico and south america used to worship the sun and moon, so don't tell me our culture hasn't been changed.
I assume you mean South America........

A note to The Gangster Thug.... there in no Continent of American as you claim. There is the North American Continent and the South American Continent.

So if your imaginary Continent of America was stolen from you as you claim then when you find it....it's all yours. I think it is located near Atlantis.
That's a rhetorical question; why can't English be the official language of Greece or Japan? We're America!
My family is the descendants of immigrants --They came into the United States legally so -

Why can't the official language of the United States be Gaelic or German?

Seems fair to me.
YOU want to speak spanish go to mexico.
And the official 'economic system' of America? Why not those of Spanish-speaking countries to our south? Then, none of them would have a reason to come here and we could sit in our roofless shanties, have 10 babies per family and rot.

That's probably what they're hoping for, huh?

No. These illegals come here with a false pride and determination born of the assumption that, somehow, this time their system will work.

Why?

Look at history. In the mid-1830s, the government of Mexico, under General Santa Anna, attempted to centralize power. However, several Mexican states rebelled against his government, including Texas, California, San Luis Potosí, Querétaro, Durango, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Yucatán, Jalisco and Zacatecas.

TEN states, at least, saw that the Mexican way wouldn't work. Mexico managed to keep all but Texas and California, WHICH it (Mexico's government) willingly surrendered after a careful review of the terms of a treaty. They even bargained. In the end, the U.S. paid them $15 Million.

That's an Official Spanish country's way.
The US should not have an official language.

Beyond that - just wondering about how the Native Americans must have felt when all those darn illegally immigrating white people showed up wiping away (violently I might add) their "Main Street" and their language?
Wow, you are sure fishing tonite.
Why can't you take a swim back over the border.
why cant' the latinos who refuse to speak English get a brain?
hahahahahahaha, you need to take this over to jokes and riddles. i needed a good laugh. thanks
It is just good manners and respectful to speak the language of the country you are visiting and living in. If I visit Japan, I should know a few phrases in Japanese. If I live there, I should learn to speak Japanese fluently. That's just common decency.

However, I don't think you have to worry. Spanish will be spoken more than English in America within 50 years.

I've seen a lot of fighting on the boards - Americans vs. illegals. The truth is, illegals are winning. They will win. And what they will win is a country that is as broke and corrupt, as poor and crime-ridden as what they left because they are turning America into another Mexico. And Americans are simply along for the ride...and paying out the nose for the ride as well.

Tancredo said that Miami looks like a third world country already and we're just going to keep going that way.

So congrats illegals! You win!
Because - while its never been officially declared the national language - we got our independence from the English in the Revolutionary War and that was what everyone spoke. A bunch of illegals and Mexican women popping out a kid every year won't get us to change that no matter how much they might like it.
You have to EARN IT.
During the 18th century, there were so many Germans in America that Congress considered a proposal to print federal laws in both English and German, but it did not pass. Benjamin Franklin recognized the problem and was concerned that the prevalence of Germans speaking German would require interpreters in Parliament. Franklin was, of course, right and the Germans and other non-English-speaking immigrants learned English and we lived happy with English as the only US language until the influx of the Spanish-speaking illegals who are either too stupid or too lazy to learn English.

If Hispanics want to speak Spanish, then they should go south to one of the Spanish-speaking countries. On the other hand, if they want to live and work in the United States, they should learn English. By refusing to learn English, they are only hurting themselves. And, let’s face it, if they spent as much time studying English as they do bellyaching because the rest of us don’t speak Spanish, they would be speaking English in no time and the problem would be solved.
