Why weren't the immigrants who entered through Ellis Island questioned about their legal status?

I here the anti-illegal immigrant crowd keep repeating the "my great great grandparents came to this counrty legally" chant. I'm curious to know what type of legal process they had to "wait" for or go through when they came here from (mostly) Europe? If my memory serves me right, I don't remember learning anything about visas or work permits. The sick or unfit were rejected but I don't remember anybody being rejected for being "illegal."

Answer:
Thanks for the laugh. The only problem with opening an "Ellis Island" kind of thing is that it would constantly have a long line, so then they will say the line was too long. ;)
They spoke english and waved American flags, and werent at all interested in fighting against American culture...and there werent 20 million of them!
Are you kidding? Why did you embarrass yourself by asking this? By going through Ellis Island they were following the legal process. Wow.
European immigrants were packed into ships that took months to reach America. Many died along the way. Once they arrived, they were processed at Ellis Island. They weren't questioned because coming through Ellis Island was the legal way to emigrate to the United States.

Learn some history before comparing them to the illegals flooding in from Mexico.

In response to the ignorance in your additional details, illegal immigrants don't want to go through the process of applying for citizenship to become legal. They have the option to come here legally, but choose not to. They don't want to pay for things like income tax, health care and automobile insurance. They just want to make their below minimum wage and send it back to their country so their families can become rich while leeching off of Americans who end up paying for everything they refuse to.
The immigrants who came through Ellis did so legally. That's what Ellis Island was, a legal port of entry for immigrants.

There's no comparison between those people and the current crop of Mexican invaders.

Obviously you don't remember history or facts.

Are you a bush supporter?
you answered you own question...they came through Ellis Island...please read about what went on there and hopefully you'll understand what I mean and why your question is self-answering.
It was the easiest way to occupy the land stolen from the NATIVES ! Check out the 'OKLAHOMA LAND RUSH' and you'll see what I mean !
By coming through Ellis Island, they became DOCUMENTED immigrants.
They weren't and the sick were kept in a hospital setting until well. There weren't work permits or any papers required because we were all immigrants at the time.Immigrants were welcomed and each group had their fights to overcome as there population in this country grew. The Irish,Scots and Greeks were the most looked down on.Humans are the most vicious in the animal kingdom.
I think you are missing the point, we the citizens have the right to set our immigration policy, for good or bad. What happen on Ellis Island was another time and place, we can not answer for those who came before us.
Learn a little more about the only legal entry for immigrants at the time - who by the way were given an offer to come... And the difference between the illegals who enter of their own accord and rules.

Edited: - Wouldn't it be just as amusing that the border fence also lead them all into your new Ellis Island idea. Meaning that when the wall was finished, and they came through it - they also had a unbelievably long dark hallway to walk/run through. And when they came out on the other side - they entered into this massive Ellis Island type building with armed military, border patrol, and police. A ticket number machine there for them to get a number, stand in line, and wait for their number to be called - like at our DMV. And hired DMV employees to conduct the registry process and fees. Can you imagine how fricken slow the process would be and take?
This might help with your history lesson.
My great-grandparents came through Ellis Island. I have also visited there. I would recommend anyone to visit there.

How could you be so stupid? Don't they teach kids anything in school these days? I guess that's what we get for tolerating illegal immigration. Morons like you who know nothing of U.S. history and have no respect or even understanding of the law or our traditions as Americans.

Get this; There was no illegal immigration back then. Every single immigrant came through Ellis Island or another designated port of entry. Otherwise you were deported immediately wich is how every other nation on Earth operates. If you allow illegal immigration ,then you have anarchy wich is what we have in urban areas now.
THey came on ships enter ellis island, questioned filled out forms given a name that is similar to their real name, they get deloused and I think that was part of their medical exam.

Angel Island was even worse. THe immigrants their was housed in prison like setting for months before entering the US.

THe difference is that they came on ships and so immigration was controlled. The fee for being on board these ships is far more expensive than the proposed fine on the new immigration proposal.

And yes it was horrible how Spain/Mexico stole Oklahoma from the Natives.
When you had come through Ellis Island no matter what people are telling yo it was North the legal way. That is why we use the word WOPS( without papers) it is people who had actually had come here illegally. Although at that time coming illegally wasn't the problem that it is today we are getting nothing from Mexico except people who just know to go North and that is it. No skilled labor no one really worth letting into our country. At the time Ellis Island we had needed skilled workers, but we were able to use the unskilled workers. NOW it is a different story we are full now and we don't need tr rash from Latin America to drain our health care and programs that are designed for Americans. They dry up outre food stamps and Access Insurance, yet they don't want to be Americans they won't even learn the language. If anyone has anything to say against this tell them to work with Mexico Mexicans fora week and tell you what they really think of them. I am no t saying that they are all bad just for the most part , If you come to this country do what everyone else that comes does learn the damn language and culture because if you are here you should be American it don't make a difference where you are from. The South Americans Are they only ones who have not learned this one. So if you don't know the language, or don't see yourself as one of get out.
Those who came through Ellis island were legal because they came through Ellis Island or Galveston or other entry points. They had papers before leaving Europe. Those who came without papers were examined here. All legal immigrants had to pass physical exams to prevent the spread of disease. Those ‘with out papers’ were stamped WOP. Now you know where that came from. The term “wet back” came from Mexicans crossing the Rio Grande illegally and getting wet.
