The baby will have do be included on the mother's passport to be allowed un the US. So unless you have access to that document, I suggest you stay out of it!
There's nothing illeagal about it unless the adoption is illegal. You can tell people anything you want about how you got a kid as long as the kid was obtained legally.
If she adopted the child then its still her child so either way you should just leave it alone.
