Why can't the US help build Mexico and other S. American nations?
Answer:
We will never help another country because we caused most of the problems in the first place. Please read "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man". We go into these poor countries under the guise of helping them. Convince them that it's in their own self interest to pay an American Corp. like Halliburton to build, say, a damn for electrical service. The economic projections from the U.S. are not anywhere near what that country was told, and they end up in debt to the U.S. to pay for these failed projects. That huge debt puts a strangle hold on the country so they can't pay for hospitals, government backed jobs, schools, etc., which puts them in a downward cycle of poverty. Then, Nike, or whoever, goes in, puts up a factory to make shoes for slave wages. This has been especially bad for those countries since Regan eliminated US tariffs on overseas goods and Clinton passing NAFTA and GATT. One of the reasons Bush hates Hugo Chavez (president of Venezuela) so much is that he told the world bank to go to hell, and has developed alternative models of Economic Development where the poor nations of Latin America are working together to help themselves. The largest of which is flex fuel which in 10 short years has made Venezuela completely fuel independent. They import NO oil, which Bush and his oil pals see as a threat to global oil prices.
how do you fix an entire country? what about africa? what about asia? should the us be responsible for fixing the world?
screw that. Deport them now. Build a big fence.
NO AMNESTY. WRITE YOUR SENATORS!
first off, no; second off, US has to look out for itself, not south american countries that corrupted theirselves
Lets outsource some more manufacturing their way
the problem is that several of the latin american countries are controlled by dictators and are openly hostile to the u.s. if we were to help them, theres no telling what they would do when they were on firm economical ground.
God only helps those who help themselves.not to help themselves to their neighbors property though!!
It is not the USA's responsibility to build mexico and s america into great places. That responsibility lies with their citizens.
Those are NOT our countries. IF we were to take them over then we could do that. But why? This isn't Home Depot.
"You can do it!, but we won't help"
People need to stop depending on America to fix their countries problems. They have a government of their own... Let them fix their own problems!!! We need to spend our money on our own people!!!
Why is it America's job to help Mexico when they don't even want to help themselves.? Why is it America's job to do everything for everyone ??
Well we could send back their people that way they could clean their own Country.
I personally didn't agree with the "free trade" thing they did. I firmly believed it was a bad thing to do.
Thing is...the Ford plant is there.Hershey is there and Lord knows how many other plants are there. I've read of bread plants and things that might not seem so big till they're gone. But they are there. In Mexico..not the US. Damn.what does America do anymore? Nike...Fruit of the loom, Rebok? No...I read Jockey, Hanes, all of them aren't in America anymore.
I don't think people see how we have been sold out! I know Chicago toll roads have been "leased out" to other countries.
We dumped unreal amounts of money into 3rd world nations for nothing. The people the money was sent to help..never got to them.
We tried to help them...it just never went where it was supposed to go. Big business and government got in the way.just like it always does.
South and Central America are rich in natural resources. The US has largely ignored those countries while we've wasted 100s of billions in Iraq.
Most countries in South America are doing just fine without the US. Japan, China and the EU have established strong economic ties with them. Their economies are booming.
We are not your mama, take care of yourself
The US cannot help Mexico or other South American nations because there is not enough money to be made over there.
Geez...don't we get blamed all the time for minding other countries business...let them fix their own problems, they created them.and while they are at it.stay the heck out of our country before WE need help because they have brought us as far down as they brought themselves.
the US supports mexican dictators?!?!?! what are they teaching you liberals at columbia?
You can't 'fix' other peoples countries. They have to do it themselves. China and India are doing a pretty good job, for instance, in spite of being overpopulated, and one of them being a commie dictatorship.
Mexico doesn't even have a communist dictatorship, has plenty of natural resources, and, were it not for emmigration, would have another 9 or 10 million or so very determined hard-working people.
The U.S. should fix Mexico and all of South America. Cause the U.S. has destroyed them by supporting corrupt officials and robbed their natural resources.
Do you realize that the 2nd richest man in the world is Mexican (and that he will be the richest in a few years)? Why should we pay when they are stealing from their own people.
Also, do you realize that Mexico is not a South American nation?
The USA is pouring plenty of money into Mexico and Central & South American countries, especially for goods. The powers that be in those countries take the money for themselves. In fact, the man about to catch Gates for the richest man in the world is Mexican and lives in Mexico ... tell him to fix his country.
It is not up to us to fix their problems, it is their responsiblity to ensure their country grows, we have enough of our own problems to solve. Blame us if you will, but I doubt we can wave a magic wand and make dictators and crazy leaders go away.
America did give multi-millions to Mexico with the promise that Mexico would develop the country to help its poor. Then when Mexico got the money the government officials kept the money for themselves. Then America gave them another multi-million dollars to develop and help the poor. Guess what happened with that money? You guessed it - it too was kept by the corrupt government officials.
What should have happened instead was America should have kept a hold of the money and using it while America helped developed Mexico.
How many times do you and others think America should keep throwing money at corrupt governments is stead of doing the job ourselves? Even in South Africa the corrupt government has a fee they require most to pay before they even allow anyone to do something for the African people. Mexico did it, the former Philippines president, his wife, (Imelda, and Ferdinand Marcos) and their government did it, as do others countries and their corrupt government. Do you know where Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos sought safe haven after their government was over-thrown? To the US where they not only received asylum, but security paid for by the Tax-payers dollars. So although Ferdinand has passed away - his wife Imelda is living quite high on the hog in Hawaii. That is unless she finally passed away too.
Edited: - How do you like the way China is paying the US back with the poisons they use on their own crops, and delivering it to US? China knows full well that we haven't used those poisons for years.
The thing is that Corruption is present everywhere. Sad 2 say that those who have the power in Mexico are the descendants of u guessed it, the Spanish that came 2 reside there. And the majority of Mexican who are getting screwed by the system are the indigenous people.
Sad,
Cuando Saldra de esa situacion mi pais?
Judging from the answers above, the many Americans are too selfish to act in their own self interest. The NAFTA treaty was intended to strengthen the economies of Latin America and lessen the motivation for illegal immigration to the US. After initial investments in Latin America, US multinationals found that they could get even cheaper labour in Asia. Rather than stabilizing the US southern border, US corporations decided to export wealth and jobs to China to support an unprecedented military buildup in a country with ICBMs targeted on American cities. Personally, I think that the US would be strategically wiser to trade more with Latin America and less with Asia.
