Moving to England from the US and looking for answers?

I am considering the possibility of moving to England from the US. How difficult is it to move there? Where is a good place to live (I have a teenager that is a competitive fencer so I can not be too far off the beaten path)? How are Americans really accepted right now (I have no love for Bush)? What are the job possibilities? Have you had problems with outsourcing? How does the cost of living compare to the US ( I live in Oregon)?
Anyone that has been through it- do you have any tips? What about citizenship and how difficult is it to obtain if we decide to do that? Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:
Only a few small-minded people are hostile to Americans as people. And although the cost of living is relatively high, especially with current exchange rates, and the weather is rubbish, life in the UK can be OK.

However, you do not have a right to simply come and live here, just as Brits cannot come freely to the States. You need to do some thinking about what kind of visa you can get. Unless you have enough money to live without working, which I guess from your question doesn't apply, you will porbably need either a work permit, applied for by a UK employer because they really need you, or an HSMP visa for someone highly skilled.

british don't really care for americans either way right now.

I love americans,i live in wimbledon it is the best place in London to live.
Sure, why would you not be accepted? mmm house prices are expensive but vary from region to region, South near London is very expensive but salaries are higher, i live North east, between liverpool (the beatles) and Birmingham (ub40) average nice house 140k, average salary15k but depends what u do, not too much crime, no guns, nice people, weather always rains though, cold in winter, traffic busy mostly, wonderful countryside, lotsa history, little villages like in romantic novels, also big cities (newton discovered gravity not far from here) (first steam engine, first iron bridge), lots more...visit London, i have seen the Queen close by 2 times, yeah come over and enjoy if u don't mind short summers.

Hi Mark C - i gave u thumbs up but u gotta find the bargains baby! u r quoting top prices, my nice little car was 1,700 pounds, here we can have a lovely meal out for 15 pounds, food is cheap also buy 1 get 1 free at Tesco Supermarket, Beers are cheaper at Weatherspoons, we have cut price cigarette stores, lotsa people get more than minimum wage, but i agree on fuel and taxes it's a rip off, and boy! u jammy bugger your rent is so cheap ha ha...

Last thing and i think most Brits will agree! We sure have got that touch of class here, that little sparkle of being all that's good in England, Come and see friend.
your always welcome Collen your our cousins and although you have anti USA people here the majority love you all i come to your country often all parts and i just love it so come on and hope you enjoy it//try the south weather is kinder in winter x
On the whole you'll be fine, however be in for a shock with the cost of living. eg..

Gas (petrol) Oregon $2.85 Gallon (£1.41 UK)

right now for the shock.

1 US gallon = 0.83 UK Gallons = 3.142 UK litres

Price of fuel in UK (Bridlington where I live) 97.9p per litre

Multiply that by 3.1412 = £3.08 then convert that to us dollars

= $6.21 for the same amount of fuel.

That seems to be the biggest shock for US people when I tell them that.

Other things (I'll convert UK to US prices so you can compare quicker)

12oz can of Coka Cola - $1.21
Loaf of sliced bread - $1.98
cooked whole chicken (medium sized) - $5.95
Pint of beer (cheapest in my locality) - $3.03
Pack of cigarettes (single pack of 20 budget label) - $8.51
4 pint carton of milk - $2.32
Small car (and I mean small) - $14,107
Meal for 2 with wine - $70

and so on.

One saving grace our minimum wage is £5.35 - $10.79 which you can get by on just about.

I know this isn't the sort of answer you were looking for but its just an idea of what to expect cost of living wise, oh as for rented property, we're lucky.

We live in a 5 bedroom house our rent (and this will cheese some UK people off) is only £350 a month (great landlord :) ) which is $705.91 and our council tax is around £100 a month - $201.65.
Here in UK Americans are liked. Our dispute is not with the American people, it's with the Geo.Bush government as well as our own UK.gov.

There are about half a million Americans living here in London. It is capital city UK. Everything you need is right here and on your doorstep, including sporting facilities for such as fencing etc.

Getting UK [British] citizenship may take a while, but should not be difficult.

I have no experience of moving to UK since I was born here. The American Embassy here in London are the people to contact.

Is there a culture difference between Oregon and UK? Yes.

Britain and America are two countries separated by a common language. Winston S Churchill.
haha u jokin right. i hope u r cuz england especially LONDON & Manchester dont like americans or 'yanks' here the negatives:
more dark (rainy, dark cloudy, showery) days than sunshine days
the whole city of london is becoming rougher than compton or memphis. Teenagers all want to belong 2 a gang simply because there have nothing better to do, in the past 2 months there have been over 20murders of teens aged 12-17 in london only. and this is on the rise. gloomy people combined with gloomy weather is not a place to raise kids. i wouldnt recommend the country sides cuz simply there are borrrrrring.
im actually thinkin of moving 2 california or michigan in about 1or2 years and i suggest u do the same if oregon is boring u...
Apologies for some of my ignorant countrymen, Americans are more than welcome!
My sister went on holiday in 1971 to England and didn't return to the states until1982.She feel in love with the place and a Englishman. Got married and found a job at ABC news London. It was easier then I think. All of the rain got her down after awhile (we are from sunny Cal.)I myself, live part time in Hungary. Gasoline is very high here, about $6.00 a gallon. Most Europeans like Americans. Good luck.
I lived in the US for 3 years (H1-B visa) and have worked there often.
The answer to your Q is simple - DON'T COME STAY IN THE US - your better off in every single way - further the UK is not populated by the English anymore so you will have a language barrier besides having a cultural barrier !!
