Was America successful at dealing with immigration and its problems in the early 20th century?

Answer:
Not really.
Yes, by passing a really strict immigration policy and enforcing it. The resulting 150,000 to 300,000 immigrants per year were assimilated and welcomed, and the power of labor grew through lack of foreign imported labor competition. That is when the middle class of America and the American Dream were born and flourished.

I'd say we handled it pretty well.

I assume you are suggesting we take a page from how we handled it then?

I agree.

Once upon a time, the US had a policy where you were not allowed into the country (as an immigrant) if you had certain illnesses (ie: TB) to prevent the spread of such diseases. If you were clean, you then had to prove that you could be of some benefit to society, not just a leach. Also, there were limits as to how many people from any one country could be admitted.

Personally, I think we should go back to these policies.
America welcomed the throngs of immigrants during that time because folks came here to "be American" and to live the American dream. The folks from Ireland and Eastern Europe recognized that their countries of origin would never let them live the free lives that they could live in America so they made a live altering decision to come here.
Today Mexicans illegally come to America to make money and send it back to Mexico. They never assimilate or "become" American nor do they want to. They often times come here just to have kids and create an "anchor baby" that ensures them residency. They utilize our services and contributevery little. they dont pay taxes yet they use our schools and hospitals.
I love the Mexican people. I think they are decent and hard working. All I ask is that they do things legally like would be expected in THEIR country.
america was very successful..there were new industries that were opening up and needed thousands of laborers....we still had wide open spaces to civilize and cities to build....most of the new immigrants responded to this need and were able to earn more than in their native countries and live a better life in america
they brought their own languages and customs, but usually got along.. they soon intermarried and the next generation was better assimilated into "american' culture... WE ARE A MIX.....WE HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL BECAUSE WE WERE INNOVATIVE AND HARD WORKERS...of course, there were
mishaps, but americans overcome obstacles,,,persevere...soon the whole world envied us and copied us...we developed a very high standard of living for the greatest number..no. we have not reached perfection....but it is not too hard to figure out, just not as easy to put into practice on a regular, sustaining basis...my own family has french, english, italian, irish who worked alongside polish, russian, african, oriental, and german...everybody's represented..we should receive far more respect and understanding for opening our doors to the "world masses
wanting to be free" i hope in the oncoming years, countries focus on improving their own populations, so people will not find it necessary to come to another country...rather that they find it within their own communities of their native lands
