Changing name of immigrant to avoid discrimination!?

i'm a legal immigrant i moved from egypt to the states and i've been living here for a year now ,my name is mohamed,i have sensed alittle bit of discrimination especially from people who talk to me over the phone or job applications basically people who didnt see me face to face, and i was wondering if it was a good idea to change my name to something else that will make me avoid these situations,is it easy to change my name?and will i've alot of troubles with the official papers like for example my college graduation certificate and other stuff that is still in my home land(will it be easy to prove that's my papers after having another name?)!and what about when i'm visiting my home land will i be using my old name or my new one!?

Answer:
I know exactly what you are talking about. I used to know a manger who wouldn't even bother to read resumes with foreign names ! But Miss kitty is Right, if they are blind that is how it goes.

Best Regards.
If you feel the need to change your name FOR YOURSELF than do it. My honest opinion DO NOT do it for others who are discriminating against you. What happens when you show up with a new name? They may discriminate by your appearance, ethnicity, gender...You should never be afraid to be who you are and the name your parents lovingly gave you.
If you choose to go through with it I advise going and seeing a lawyer or cheaper, a notary public, so that they can give you the steps you will need to follow so that your other information back home will still be seen as valid in your new country.

God Bless! I hope everything works out for you. Peace
If you change your name to avoid discrimination, you let discrimination win.
illegal is illegal.
immigrants are fine and really admired here...as long as they are legal immigrants, we love ya
but take advantage of us and break our laws...then we want you gone immediately
there are rules for immigration the world over and we are no different
think of the people who play by the rules and wait to come here legally...then all these ILLEGAL ALIENS flood in, like from mexico, and take what jobs a real legal immigrant could have had
Change it to Rodriguez or Gonzales. Nobody will bother you anymore. White Americans have assured us there is no racism against hispanics.I almost forgot if you have brown skin you are shiit out of luck.

Gonzalo is a hispanic name. You little turd, how come it was ok for you to change your name.
If you feel very strongly about it you can always look into it by asking around at court house/maybe check with your embassy on the issue and the easiest way to go about doing it. You shouldnt change your name though Mohamed is a good name, and doing so will just let those who are discriminating against you win unfortunately. And then they will keep doing it.

If you really feel discriminated against based on your name report it to your local prosecutors office. They have to look into it.

And to pol_correct - did you even read his question or are you just spewing crap to spew crap? he said he was a LEGAL immigrant.
Yeah..so, you think if you change your name - you shed your problems here in the US.or anywhere for that fact.

.then say what about when you go back to your homeland will you have any problems?

YES, THE SAME PROBLEMS YOU ARE HAVING HERE RIGHT NOW IN AMERICA (if you gave yourself an American name hell yeah you would)..EVERY COUNTRY AND IT'S PEOPLE IS GUILTY OF SOME KIND OF RACISM IN THEIR HOMELAND...IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU WANT TO ACCEPT THE TRUTH OR NOT...people all over the world hates and discriminate...even your own country...

and if the US is so bad to you.don't change your name...GO HOME and that will and should take care of your problems...why hang around and be so unblessed and discomforted?
You can change their names until the cows come home, but can you change their looks?
It is too bad that people respond that way to you. My good friend married a man from Iran 35 years ago,his name is also MohamedHe calls himself Mo,or Moe not sure about the spelling. If you decided to make a big name change it really isn't very hard. You have to file some forms and go before a judge and explain why you want the change. It is really a formality. My son also gets some grief about his first name.It is Arian which is a old name but people are uninformed and think it is Aryanand that he is a Nazi or something. He goes by the nickname Air.Good luck.
