Problem of illegal immigration depends on lot of things and just issuing national id card won't help.
Not sure which country you belong to but US already has national ID cards but that does not eliminate illegal immigration which continue to rise because there are employers available who will hire without national ID card ( SSN here ) as illegal immigrants are cheap labor and also because local cheap labor is not available. Illegal immigration can only be reduced by government and citizens efforts so as not to promote it by any means. Government by being strict on illegal immigrants, having better border security , strict monitoring of government departments to keep curruption in check etc. and most important by us, the citizens of country by not giving jobs to illegal immigrants.
Illegal immigrants come to a country because they know they will get some job which will pay more than what they get in their home country. If thats not the case, illegal immigrants will surely reduce.

The only people a national ID card would benefit are those fascist thugs and cop wannabes in government who want to track each citizen like tiny bugs they can crush any time they want. This is not the Soviet Union, Communist China or Nazi Germany. In a free Republic the government has no right to know about our private affairs, and positively no right to issue any kind of a federal ID card. Illegal aliens will remain just as they are, and obtain fake IDs just as they do now. So the only people bullied and inconvenienced will be honest citizens who are already loaded down with fascist rules and laws from a government gone wild with hunger for power. SAY NO TO NATIONAL ID CARD!!!
I think that the initial acid test should be the ability to speak, write and understand English. Legal immigrants of the US must speak English. The documentation will be the icing on the cake. I truly believe that when the government catches these criminals they need to brand a huge IA on their forehead. It would make them easy to ID when then slink back in and will disallow them for life of ever becoming citizens. Hey, they don't care about me, why should I care about them? Hard labor if you catch one with the IA already there.

I don't see that there's any problem to solve other than making them full-fledged citizens so they can take legal action against employers for paying them sub-minimum wage. Of course, that would also ruin the incentive to hire them, since this whole issue started because some bussinesses realized it was more cost-effective to bring cheap labor here rather than build factories in other countries and outsource the labor. The problem is not immigrants, whether you want to call them illegal or not. The problem is capitalism.

yes it will. studies are being done at the yale university of identification and fingerprinting for methodes of id as we speak. in the near future all individuals in the US will be ID'ed as an individual with finger prints, iris id, and voice identification from birth as a perment typical way of cellular dna association. so each individual will pay taxes,be identified for any government program and not lost in the red tape. this will benifit all tax paying individuals and identify the NON paying welfare cheating individuals in the system.
What we need is a national reality check. Any system will have weaknesses and no one solution is a miracle cure. Social Security cards were not designed to function as a national ID.
Look beyond and you will see what is needed is sweeping national change that brings better ideas, leadership and accountability. Until this happens rule making and national ID's will accomplish little.
