Answer:
I live in New Jersey (they're called states not cities though ;o)

Well NJ has very high taxes in comparison. I'd also have to believe that Michigan has lower living costs. As far as safety.. it really depends on where you go. Detroit, Michigan is a terrible city when it comes to crime, but NJ has Camden, Trenton, and Newark. You have to remember, these states are both the size of european countries, so they both have wonderful and terrible locations. I'd say the average income in New Jersey is much higher due to location (It's sandwiched in between NY, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C.) whereas michigan is rather lonely. Ultimately if you want a layed back existance far far away from anything interesting, pick michigan. If you want a MUCH faster paced existance right in the center of American culture.... clearly NJ.
Michigan has a 4 percent sales tax on everything, costs are moderate, what is a SAP? Where in Michigan do you want to live, if the job is in a rural area. then it is ok. Michigan has one of the highest education standards in the USA. Good Luck. Vote for me!
i live in michigan and i would say it is lower tax wise and better education but it helps to know what area you plan to live in and im sure its 6% not 4% for sales taxes
What cities Michigan and New jersey are states and costs of living can vary from city to city.
I don't know but it's expensive.
I lived in Muskegon, Michigan for four years with my three sons (1995-1999). It was family oriented, housing choices very reasonable, economically sound, peppered with diversity, fun summers/long winters, but most desirable was the schools my sons attended. The curriculum was top notch. The teachers were disciplined and devoted. Their reading, writing and arithmetic skills were very well developed. They are all now in high school or graduated. Since going to the Michigan schools they have not had a challenge at the schools in New Hampshire or Washington State. If he can move your family to Western Michigan, I see the most success for your family there.
